Sorry Russell

Russell blew it by signing a TEN year contract with Wolff.

If by "blew it", you mean he put him self in the perfect position to be the next Mercedes driver, then you're right.

By signing 10 year contract probably under duress Russell has put himself in a position where it's difficult for him to go to another non Merc team e.g. Ferrari. This means wolf man can keep him like a puppet on a string not necessarily to be a replacement black arrow driver.

Long term contracts have both positives and negatives. You say they have him locked in, he would say they can't get rid of him easily and made a long term commitment to him. Signing a one year contract with MB also means neither of you wants to commit to anything, they can easily get rid of him next year, he can easily leave next year.

Not following the "probably under duress" he was free to do whatever he wanted and decided the "other" isn't as good as what he took.

It's easy later to look back and say it was a good or bad move. In 2012 Hamilton came in 4th in the driver standings with Mclaren (they got 4th and 5th) and moved to MB to join Rosberg (finished 9th) and replace Michael Schumacher (finished 13th). Also somewhat of a guess and many at the time said it was a bad move.

Really the norm is 1-3 years maximum and signing for 10 to drive a merc engined car and not necessarily a W car. I think that's all that Wolff was offering to him to keep a 'tab' on him or no deal.No real bargaining power for Russ as many want to drive a W car.
