275/45/21 tires - are they safe?
Hey guys,
The OEM tire size for the 21's is 275/40/21 for the fronts. Is it safe to use a 275/45/21 if someone would like to keep the 21-inch rims but achieve a larger sidewall (for the winter time)? Similarily would it be okay to match that with a 315/40/21 for the rears VS a 305/35/21? EDIT: Spoke to 2 different BMW techs and they confirmed that besides the ~3% speed change in the odometer there will be no issue with this setup - for anyone who was thinking about it.

Unforunately, the rims I was looking at are machined aluminum, which I've been told are not suitable for winter and if I run them in winter I will void the warranty so I've scratched that plan for now and decided to just go with BR-10 Rims in 20 Diameter.

Yes, according to the tech they will fit the air suspension model just fine so they would fit all other models easily since the air suspension can be lowered quite a bit.

Tires? Yes. Tires make a difference between winter/summer Wheels? Never in the 60+ cars I've owned, 14 cars I've restored, hotrodded, modified, or raced, and the 30+ years I've been working on cars.... have I EVER heard of a "Summer only wheel"... ever. "Machined aluminum"... means basically "The exact same wheel construction as 98% of every other wheel on the planet" That sounds like a shitty wheel company, making any excuse they can not to honor a warrantee. Perhaps they apply a substandard finish to the wheels, and after a few unhappy customers complained, they instilled a "no warrantee if driven in the winter" clause. Shady. Very shady. Sounds a lot like a company that offers a piggyback tuning ECU, that comes with an "engine warrantee".... but only if you never actually drive the car in any conditions. (ahem)

I want to swap out the stock 21 inch RFT with 275/45R21 and 315/40R21 non-RFT Michelin Tires. Key question was would this setup work with air suspension and you did the legwork for us. Thank you. I prefer taller tire side-wall.
I think in Canada we are better off with dedicated square winter tire setup - narrower tire works better on snow and you can rotate tires. I am thinking about 275/45R20 tires with replica ART wheels (winter rated, powder coated, made in Quebec, good price). For winter which wheels and tires you guys are selecting? |

How should we interpret ~3% speed change? Because tire circumferance will be larger with taller side-wall (I assume) would it mean the car will go ~3% slower?

I did more digging into the sizing. There are 3 revs/mile difference on the rear tires if we change the tire wall from 40 to 45. I am not sure how this difference will impact the AWD system and wares on the tire itself. Picture below:

Similar setup but with 22s
Looks like I'm leaning towards doing the same thing but going with a square 22" setup.
275/40/22 More tire options and comes out to be the same 30.7 height and 10.8 width. Overall dimensions should be the same at the 275/45/21s right? Am I missing anything? |

I ended up with doing a square 21" setup. 21x10.5 with et30 for perfect without any rubbing. Sitting on 295/40's all the way around.

Some wheels may not have a coating suitable for use in winter/salt situations. Even 'raw' aluminum wheels would likely have a clear-coat on them. IF they don't, I would not want to use them in the winter, and actually, the summer, either unless they were anodized, and even then, I'd be leery about using them in the winter...coated or painted, no problem, as that's what most of them out there are.

You appear to have the exact set-up I was thinking about. Correct me, it appears you put 295/40ZR21 as a Sq set-up? * Are you on the 741m wheels? * Do you have air suspension? * Can you post pics or direct towards pics - want to see how the staggered set-up sidewalls look with undersized rears and oversized fronts.. |
