1200 mile break in service - no oil change?

Took my new M5CS in for its 1200 mile service and afterwards I thought that all was well, went on a cruise with some friends, pushed the car pretty hard and definitely could smell the brakes at the end. Didn’t do anything above 135mph as the manual recommends. However, I noticed that my break-in service indicator wasn’t reset. I started taking a look at my receipts and I realized that the only parts used were the diff fluids. No new oil was used for my car on that list.

I called the SA and he told me that the oil change wasn’t performed as part of the break-in “because my key didn’t say it needed it” and so only the diff fluid was changed as part of the break-in procedure. I recalled that an oil change was done at break in to my ‘21 comp and mentioned it to them and he just said “well it must be different because their break in service doesn’t cover the oil change.”

I’m pretty pissed because it means that I was romping on my car and going WOT with the same oil that the car has been broken in on — with metal shavings and the like. They’re trying to make me pay for an oil service now if I want one done, because apparently my car doesn’t need it at 1200 miles.

Realistically, how bad is a couple hours of hard driving on dirty oil for the car’s motor? Could I have issues down the line because of this? Is this something I should demand that they do as part of the included service package?

I’m going back to the dealer tomorrow to request in writing that they are refusing to do the oil service as part of the break in service, and taking my car to an independent shop for the oil change regardless. If I have any warranty issues down the line I’m going to make use of this statement because it makes no sense that every M5 gets oil changes at 1200 miles except the m5cs.

They said same thing to me. Go to a different dealer. That engine is full of metal dust from break in. I would have them drain the oil cooler also it takes about 1.5 qts more. Otherwise on engine oil change it won't drain the cooler so you will still have metal in oil. This was mine at 500 miles I changed it again at 900. Change the front diff fluid also, not just the rear.

My cs it doesn't register on ista for some reason while the standard m5 does. So I think they may play a a part in this. All service functions are blank in the readout with the bmw dealer software so the ticker that says change oil isn't tell it to do so. Maybe same as yours

Are both the M5s yours ?, if so, what are your findings between the two ?. Would you say the CS is noticeably quicker than the Competition ?.

I just picked up my CS and traded in my comp for it.

It feels like a completely different car. Obviously I'm still under 1200 mi so haven't really pushed it that hard but even the first 5 minutes I drove the car around, it felt way different. It feels much more nimble and just dialed in.

Straight line just from what I've felt so far isn't much different, as it shouldn't really be, but as a whole the car feels way better.

How many miles were on the car the oil cooler came from? That oil is extremely dark. It is hard to tell if the oil from the engine is filled with bubbles or metal shavings. If there is that much metal in the oil, I would think the damage is done.

Okay. Came back to BMW and spoke with the shop foreman. He agrees that the oil change was forgotten and is doing it now. I drove my car hard for about 75 miles before realizing that the oil change wasn’t done. Could those 75 miles of harder driving with the same oil as break in be that bad for the motor?

I had a ‘21 Comp and agree completely with Canadian ///M’s comments. Car just feels more dialed in.

I wouldn't worry about it. There is so many people who doesn't give a shit about break in period. Just drive it hard and enjoy your new ride!

I wouldn’t worry about it either. In the event something should go wrong with the motor, which is highly unlikely, just revert back to the shop forgetting about the oil change and make some demands. Maybe get an extended warranty or something on the house.

I wouldn't worry too much over it, the engine oil filter is there for the purpose of filtering out particles, the metal shavings included. Some hard driving might even do the engine good by removing the excess metal properly. Just enjoy your ride.

I had my break-in service yesterday -- despite me confirming in advance that oil and both diff fluids would be changed, they only did oil and rear diff.

Obviously would have been better if they had done the front as well, but how much should I care at this point?

I take mine in Friday for break-in and already know they are only doing the rear diff and oil. I wouldn't care too much. My guess is they were changing the front early on and data proved it was unnecessary. Enjoy the drive!

I have a 2021 X5M (same driveline) and only the engine oil, oil filter and rear diff fluid were changed at the 1,200 mile service.

This is well documented. They stopped back in 2019.

First Break in Service 2023 M5

Had my Service 2 days ago. 1235miles

The SA said that the car's computer is now unrestricted....I did hit 5500RPM prior to the break in due to it being in manual mode and there was no restrictions.

Not sure what is "opened up" maybe launch mode? I never hit above 100MPH prior to the break in.

No no no no nope! Nothing is unlocked. Y'all gotta stop believing your SA knows anything about anything. I don't care if you buy them a Christmas present every year (which is just weird). They're not your friends (maybe 1 of you is) just like a kind waitress doesn't actually want your number. It's just her job.

I didn't believe him either. I never met the guy. My SA is always different because I never use the same dealer for service. Always go with the first one that has an available appt.

I can confirm that my oil was changed by the dealership at break in service on both of my M5s (pre-LCI base and LCI Comp).
