Genuine confusion around this new M5
Hi - new owner here so sorry if this is a silly question....
Have searched this topic but not really found a clear answer.... 2 weeks & 650 miles in to my new M5 and I am confused about this exhaust and sound.... Just want to check I should not be worried about anything? So - brand new UK spec M5 with Sports Exhaust option - I drive 100 motorway miles in it - lovely and warm - start heading through town trying to work things out - car in Sport Plus - exhaust button on and lots of noise, pops and bang as you come of the throttle at low speed under 3k. 5 mins later - same situation and nothing - absolutely nothing - not a single pop, bang or fart - whatever you call it - despite whatever I try. The exhaust is just normal and almost quite. Drive another 10 miles - pulling in to my road, come of the throttle in 2nd at 20mph and bang, bang, bang its alive again! Confused!!!! Is this normal guys or is something up? Just struggling to understand why one minute this car is really loud and the next minute it's not? I get it is wildly different between Efficient and Sport Plus but if you are always in Sport Plus should it not always be loud? Thoughts?

Congrats on the car purchase. I took delivery of M5 Comp in may and I have not experienced what you are mentioning. The pops and bangs are so predictable on the car when on the right setting. Leaving the exhaust button on and with the engine map to sport plus you should get plenty of burbles and pops consistently. Even more so when you start down shifting manually when coming to a stop as the engine revs higher. I have 3k miles on car now and do notice it being a little more due to moisture in exhaust as others have mentioned. I did however disable ASD, Artificial Sound, in the cabin so it has a natural sound from engine and exhaust. Makes absolutely no sense whey they put ASD on the M5 as it does not need it. Car makes plenty of awesome sounds on its own.

Just make sure the exhaust button is in the ON position. If it's on and you're in Sport + it should be popping and burbling. If that's not the issue address it with your SA.

Thanks guys - I can confirm the exhaust button is always on and in Sport Plus.....
Like you have said - I would expect it to be pop bang crazy all the time - however after a few minutes it seems to stop before starting again! Weird!

All BMW’s have the same exact problem! Noticed it on the 8 series as well! The exhaust have a mind of its own and sometimes the pops and bangs just stop out of the blue!

Can't speak for others but the difference between any notable pops/bangs from the exhaust below 1000 miles and after the break-in service was quite noticeable. At 7,000 miles now, it's definitely more prominent now, then when it was I drove her off the lot.

I can absolutely agree, mine also does this. I read on here somewhere that its as a result of a brief pause in the overfuelling which causes the pops and bangs, however in manual mode its almost completely predictable. Its odd and can be a little frustrating but it is what it is, I have as yet not found a resolution to it. Having had the car for a year (12 months yesterday) I am a little bit over it now.

Good news, though, the 20s do it, too, so it's consistent. |
