Dinan DC3 wheel initial review
After shopping a bit, I decided to purchase the Dinan DC3 wheels in matt black to replace the stock 706 wheels on my recently acquired 2021 M5C.
I ordered the wheels on Monday and they shipped out the same day. Sadly, UPS had some sort of problem. The wheels ship in 2 separate boxes and today I received the rear wheels, but the front wheels are floating around in the UPS ether with a hopeful delivery date of Monday. I unwrapped one of the rear wheels and it looks very nice. It was well packed and double boxed. My initial observations are as follows. 1. Made in China (for those who care) 2. Bathroom scale says it weighs 25 pounds. I tried both the wheel alone and then me alone and me + wheel. In both cases the scale insisted the wheel was 25 pounds. This is slightly disappointing as Dinan advertises the wheel as 23.6 pounds. My wheel did have the center cap installed, but I can't imagine that weighs over a pound. Therefore, Dinan has been a bit "optimistic" with its specifications. Despite the wheels being 5.6% heavier than advertised, they are over 10 pounds lighter than each 706 wheel they will replace, so eliminating over 40 pounds of unsprung rotating mass should still be quite beneficial. Also, each wheel is 1/2" wider than stock which should spread the tire tread a bit for a wider contact patch. I hope to get the wheels installed with the stock (unfortunately, Pirelli) tires at the dealer next week when I am in for my 1,200 mile service. I will update this post after logging some miles. Wow that's a disappointment. I would be asking them for some reimbursement for misinformation about weight.... and I was the one telling you that they would not lie that's a shame

Update UPS finally managed to deliver the front wheels, so I was able to weigh them and then get the new wheels installed which allowed me to weight the now empty stock wheels. Without further delay, here is the complete data. Stock 706m front wheel = 35.5 lbs. Stock 706m rear wheel = 36 lbs. Note, this includes center caps and balancing weights for both front and rear. Dinan DC3 front wheel = 23.75 (this is an approximation as I did not take the wheel out of all the wrapping and with the wrapping, plastic rim guard and center cap it came out to 24 lbs. even) Dinan DC3 rear wheel = 25 lbs. (this was fully unwrapped, but with center cap). Net wheel weight savings = (2 * (35.5 - 23.75)) + (2 * (36 - 25)) = 45.5 lbs. While I am slightly disappointed that the Dinan wheels did not match their claimed weights (22.5 lbs. claimed front versus 23.75 lbs. measured; 23.6 lbs. claimed rear versus 25 lbs. measured), I am pleased at the significant overall result. Given the price of the Dinan wheels, I am not shocked that they are a bit heavier than claimed. As far as I can tell, the nearest price competitor is the Titan wheel and the claimed weights for those are about the same as the measured weights for the Dinan. One final weighing thought is that I did all of this on my reasonably accurate bathroom scale. Therefore, even if the absolute numbers are not entirely accurate, the relative numbers should still be quite accurate. As an aside, as others have said, BMW should be ashamed to sell a "Competition" car with boat anchor wheels. I will post further updates once I have driven more than 8 miles (back from the tire shop) on the new wheels. I will also post photos once I have the car out in daylight. Meanwhile, I will say the wheels do look very nice in matte black with my car's MBB paint. |

Some owners spec cars w/ other wheels but BMW does provide a lighter, forged wheel for Comp owners.

Also, 28 to 29 lbs. is quite heavy for a forged wheel. HRE are quite expensive, but they are closer to 20 ibs. Even my slightly heavy Dinan wheels are at least 5 lbs. lighter per wheel than the 789m wheels and cost about 40% less. Sadly, this is consistent with my experience across many car brands. I have had very heavy stock wheels from Audi, Tesla, Mitsubishi and others. The only brand that in my experience ships a light forged wheel as stock equipment is Porsche. |

Dealers are clueless unfortunately so not really surprised. I spec'd my current M5C and just spec'd a 21' and no issue ordering the 789m's. With all of this said, the 789's were only used for about a month before going to 21" forged wheels LOL .. sitting in garage for almost three years and will back on the car for lease return.

Next Update Photos below. Sorry, I know the car is dirty. I live in Portland and it rains a bunch so I haven't had an opportunity to wash it yet. I expect the dealer will clean it up on Friday when it goes in for its 1,200 mile service. No spacers, just the wheels. I believe the wheels stick out more than stock, but I like the look. The rear does look like it is crying out for a wider tire. ;-) So far I have just driven on the freeway and a few local streets, so no opportunity to test acceleration or handling. Based on this, I have a few initial observations. 1. There is a bit more road noise with these wheels. I am not surprised as heavier wheels would likely attenuate the noise better. 2. There is a bit more road feel. Again, not surprising as a lighter wheel would not damp out as much road surface texture. I will provide additional updates as I get the opportunity to do more performance oriented driving. As an aside, I asked my dealer to install the wheels during my upcoming 1,200 mile service and the dealer refused saying it would only install BMW parts. I was surprised. I instead went to a local Discount Tire / America's Tire where I have gotten very good and good quality service in the past. I suspect I saved quite a bit of money versus the BMW labor rates ;-). |

I have not done much in the way of "performance driving", so I cannot provide an objective or even much of a subjective evaluation.
In more mundane terms, the wheels have held up well with no issues even over some pretty sketchy roads with lots of pot holes. There are also no air leaks or other operating problems. Overall, aside from the slightly higher than advertised weight, I am satisfied and I don't think you can get a decent quality fully forged wheel at a lower price. The nearest competitor is the Titan wheel, but oddly those do not include center caps and the cost of the center caps is absurd. I am looking forward to upgrading to Michelin PS4S tires and possibly going a bit wider than stock now that I have these wider wheels. |
