According to insiders, the RS6 business case is tightly coupled to the reintroduction of the A6 allroad in the US. VW axed the SportWagen and Alltrack so the R is not coming. While it can't strictly be ruled out with 100% certainty, realistically it's not happening. If they were going to bring the R, they'd have held on with the alltrack and planned to bring in the new one.

Strange comment seeing how the Golf R styling has always been very reserved and adult compared to well every sporty car out there. It's the perfect vehicle for people that want something sporty and capable that doesn't scream "look at me" or boy racer.

Base Golf 8s look kinda wonky and very bland even for a VW, the fast versions like the GTI, GTI Clubsport and the R really turn the volume up. I am really digging the R, looks wise. It's growing on me, although the Mk7.5 was really hard to beat. AND it had hydraulic struts for the hood AND it had physical buttons in the interior.

Suspension changes with that added 1.2 negative camber, tweaked 4Motion and VW's ever-improving DCC sound really promising.

If anything this comment would make more sense for a CTR or Veloster N, but the Golf R has always been the "Adult Hot Hatch."

Uh, along with "Literally any brand new car"

If you're in high school, you should be driving a piece of shit you bought for $2000 so when you inevitably crash it, its not a big deal.

Wonder if US consumers will have access to the optional Akrapovic exhaust or will we once again be slighted. :

This is why I would wait for MK8.5. I owned an MK7 and the MK7.5 was improved considerably inside and out.

Like every new car today, I hated the Mk8 exterior but it has steadily grown on me.

I do wonder if VW will listen to the critics and put back some buttons in the MK8.5. Compared to the MK7.5 and even MK6, I think the new interior is like 3 steps backwards. I loved my MK6 GTI and its quality/no bullshit, if not a bit austere interior.

The Golf R on paper is the car I've been looking for since the STI hatch got discontinued in 2015, but for whatever reason I could never get excited enough about it to buy one. Can't put my finger on why.

Guess I'll just wait for the next gen Subaru. It'll be ugly and quirky and I will somehow love it.

I've had both too and it's a mixed bag. I prefer the front bumper and LED headlights to the older HID, but do like the cleaner Mk7 rear bumper.

And you got a larger screen, but lost a lot of content. Backlit upper buttons, chrome squiggle on the window switches, a/c vent in the glovebox and felt lining, underseat drawer, battery felt cover, hood lining and rear spare liner.

Needs to be about 5” longer for my needs. That ends up being the crux for me.

A few years back I traded in my 15 M3 for a 2018 Golf R. However, that relationship was short lived. Six months later I traded it in for my current M3. It wasn't so much the look of the vehicle, but For me it lacked engagement and power. I guess having the M3 spoiled me.

I daily drove an F80 and now drive Golf R 7.5 daily.

M3 feels way more special, but Golf is great as a commuter in traffic with a manual, it has short gearing so you shift all the time and it has just the right amount of power to have fun in stop and go driving....IMO

It feels super small in exterior dimensions but spacious in the interior easy to park and gets zero attention. I was only planning on driving the R for a couple of winters when I bought it, until the next daily, but there are things I am going to miss.

The subtle looks, lower cost, and winter performance, but mostly the car does not overpower city driving, it feels like a cohesive relationship, where my replacement options CTV Blackwing and M3 will feel completely over-powered for the same roads.

I am somewhat surprised how much I have liked the car and I think the Mk 8 Golf R looks great.

Agreed, no such issue with a 6MT though.

Also, VW in reference to plastic everywhere, but that seems to be thing even in M2/3/4s and other brands etc etc.

Regarding the plastic in general for this car, are there cars that do it better? This is a 45K performance version of a low tier vehicle. Is there another brand putting out a 45K performance variant that has a bunch of leather/fake leather surfaces? They could probably offer a 2K leather option and get decent results with it.

M3+ tier gets you access to full leather options. But they also cost 50% more and the leather packages are 3-4k.

The irony of that is...

I was speaking to my CA at Porsche and he mentioned he sees Carbon Fiber as the same thing, just plastic.

He is the only one I know of that sees CF in that way and it kinda.... brought a different look for me that I didn't realize I needed to know lol
