Great how-to, I completed it in 20 minutes this afternoon. No chance to drive yet, but I’ll leave any impressions once I do. Thanks to the OP!

And to OP:

How are you guys unscrewing the screws for the top of the airbox with it staying in the engine bay?? LOL

An amendment should be made :

The correct way to do this unscrew the one hose clamp and PULL the airbox OUT.. and undo it with a screwdriver ,

no angles or worry of dropping screws in the bay.. lol

Step 1 (Red) - Remove these plastic covers. They pop off with a light pull strait upwards.

Step 2 (Orange) - With two flat blade screw drivers on either side of the center pin, gently lift the pin up then remove the plastic pop rivets.

Step 3 (Yellow) - Loosen the two hose clamps on either side of the air hose and remove air hose.

Step 4 (Green) - Remove the two bolts for the metal brace.

Step 5 (Blue) - Loosen the 6 bolts that secure the air box cover. BMW finally got smart and designed these bolts so they don't come out all the way, they have a retainer on the inside to keep them attached to the air box lid so you can't drop them down into the engine bay.

Step 6 (Purple) - Drivers side only, loosen the bolt that holds the rubber shield in place.

Step 7 - Lift air box cover and use a flat blade screw driver to pop the charcoal filters out of the air box cover.

Step 8 - Reinstall the air box cover making sure it's on straight and makes a tight seal all the way around. Reverse steps 7 through 1 to reinstall everything.
Thanks for posting this - was a great guide! Completed in 40 mins (went very slowly and took my time - I'm sure it could be done in half that time). Very simple mod to delete the charcoal filter - I also replaced the original filters with BMC ones - noticed an immediate BOV sound improvement and whether it's a placebo or not the car feels more responsive like it's breathing better (could just be in my head lol)

Highly recommend!

Just got this done and threw the BMC filters in. Mostly worth it just for the chance to work under the hood, even if it's nothing big. Nice turbo whine after install though.

Thanks for this!

PS: I thought maybe mine didn't have the charcoal filters because I didn't see them at first. Took me like 3 minutes lololol

The initial post was in 2018 and is still helping newbies like me make their own changes like removing these charcoal filters. Going to do this soon on mine. Thanks four years later.

Thank you for the guide as this made putting in bmc drop-ins and removing the charcoal filter a breeze. Much appreciated!

In theory I understand the reasoning for the removal of the charcoal delete filters but I have yet to see any Dyno results displaying a positive gain From the charcoal delete removal.

I beg to differ the pre-notion behind this mod is to garner a higher volume of air therefore theoretically helping the car gain a little bit more HP along with a throatier sound. In the end, it’s a waste if you think you will acquire more HP.

These cars don't have blow off valves, they have "diverter" valves... which sux. I want my WHOOSH sound!

I think that's too synonymous with Japanese cars. Wouldn't want the M5 to sound like that personally.

Regardless, did this yesterday, and the instructions were pretty much spot on. Charcoal filter removal and some BMC drop-ins do give a noticeable increase in intake sound. There are no MAF sensors on these cars, so no worries about using oiled filters if you want.

Sounds like people are saying it’s improving throttle response, not a Hp increase. With a tune, probably would increase Hp a bit too.

Great write up. Did mine and took me around 30 minutes. I see no difference in intake sound or power gains. I think this might be beneficial at WOT.

Life is much easier if you disconnect the box and Pull it completely out of the engine bay and then unscrew the lid and replace the filter on a table

This was really easy. If I had it to do again I wouldn't even pull out the flex hoses. Once you remoe the metal brace bolts, and loosen the box lid, it should tip up enough to easily access the filters. They pop out with a flat screwdriver.
