COVID Impact on Production

Been reluctant to make this post... With the widespread implications of COVID, and tremendous impact it’s having on so many people, my situation is comparatively unimportant. I hope this post isn’t in poor taste...

I ordered an M5 in January, production slated for wk 18. I’ve been tracking it... 2 weeks ago, status changed from “order received” to “scheduled for production.” Yesterday, it moved again... backwards... to “order received.” I called Genius, got the automated system, was told “order received, no confirmed production date.”

Considering the severe impacts of COVID, I can’t be angry or frustrated... I just need to put a plan together. My current lease (Benz) ends in 3-4 weeks, and I’ve extended it twice (don’t ask how... wasn’t easy) and won’t be able to do so again.

Any insight on what I can (or can’t) expect in terms of the impact on production schedule/expected delivery? Thanks in advance, appreciate any thoughts or info.

Stay safe.

I do not think anyone’s crystal ball can predict when things will get back up to speed. I commented a while back that I think for non-critical consumer goods it will likely be early 2021 until we’re back up to at least 50% of pre covid production levels - I hope I am wrong though

BMW NA offered to extend lease ends for a month or so generally. And if you were waiting for a new BMW they have been very flexible. Don't know what MBUSA is offering or if they'll show you love since you're switching brands. Given all that's going on, if you're not driving to work can you wait...

No one knows exact timeline, but if we look at China , things shut down for roughly two months , so delay should be around that
in the interim
you have three options
1. extend your MB lease
2. try rental companies , with travel shut down , you might be able to rent something nice/exotic for cheap
3. talk to your BMW dealer , they might be able to give you a loaner during the delay

I'm on the same boat as you no pun intended. I've spoken to my CA and he has told me that the plant does have a lot of automation robots which will help a lot. Although we cannot know for sure if and/or how long delays will be.

I wanted to ask the same question in a thread but also didn't want to sound insensitive to all those impacted by the COVID19. All we can do is do the best we can with what we have, and continue to be conscious of the impact we have on others as well. We are all on this together and we will overcome this as well together.

Thx all.. appreciate the responses.

Hang in, Phoenix.. Some decent news: I spoke w/ a genius who said the plant is still supposed to open 4/19 following facility-wide decontamination... He suggested my wk 18 should be delayed 1-2 weeks, but not much more... We’ll see..

Hoping he’s right, then we’ll just have to worry about logistics... Transportation back-up, customs delays, etc.

Stay safe, everyone.

Wish you luck!

I took delivery of a 20 M5C on March 24th. Haven't really been able to enjoy it given all that's going on. Take an occasional night drive trying to reach the break in mileage but too many deer are out.

Only bonus is that there is no one out on the road. But still, not a great feeling trying to enjoy the M5C when so many ppl are not doing well.

Just my 2 cents! I still took delivery though...

Phoenix - I’m wk 18, also... Think we’re the week before 5/6... BMW weeks start on Mondays, so I believe our build week is last week of April (4/27-5/1).

I will have to extend my current lease as it ends on April 25th. You think we have any luck getting a 2021 instead? J/k I k ow that's not possible. Lol would be nice though.

Spoke with my CA yesterday and across the board new builds are in the same position. Keeping my fingers crossed we get it by July.

Me too... I assume you didn’t get any new info from your CA? Dingolfing was planning to reopen today, but I can’t confirm whether it did... Someone told me the closure was extended to 5/4. Has anyone heard when it’s reopening?

Yes it's he that advised me to call BMWNA which I did today. Was on hold for about 7 minutes. They told me I can extend my lease for up to 6 months with same payment and I get an extra 833 miles to use a month. As for the plant openings and updates I got none. It's just a waiting game. I'll update you when I get something. Be safe!

Did you take delivery of your as yet? Mine still shows scheduled for production. I feel like I won't take delivery until next year.

Lol yeah it's true. I texted my CA yesterday and asked if BMW would change it to a 2021 if delivery will end up like say September. He said they would let him know but it looks like I just got it in for the last set of 2020s. I hope I get a 2020 because I don't like the lights on the Lci model, but at this point I won't really care I just want to enjoy the car already lol.

Agreed... Really hope it’s early August. Did your CA give any insight on anticipated timeframe?

Nope no timeframe. He just said to keep checking online for an update.

My MY2020 order was changed to MY2021, but that depends on your dealer's allocation.

Greentrbo - What was your original production week?

Phoenix - Called Genius today... Originally a wk 17, i'm now wk 26 [last week of June].

Looking like early September for us, and that's if we're lucky...

I am waiting since last year to put in order for 2021 LCI M5, and told by dealer no 2021 allocations out yet, no order sheet for 2021 even available. How do you have a 2021 on order already? I was told they will finish out 2020 model production and then do a delayed switchover to 2021 late summer. Have you seen an order and pricing sheet for 2021 LCI? Any info appreciated, thanks.

Not sure about that. It all happened very fast and we focused on trying to salvage what we could.
