Should I sell my '18 X3 M40i to get an M5 Comp or keep the X3 and buy an M2 Comp? The M5 is too expensive for me to keep both but both options will cost about the same .

I have a family of 4...

I would get the M2. Having two cars I think outweighs just having the one F90. Do i follow you correctly?

The M5 is fun. However a year into it and I am over it. Instead of M2 comp I'd do the F80 or the next gen. Much more fun cars.

Yes, I believe you do. F90 just sounds so amazing. Will be test driving both soon.

How many slots do you have in your garage? (If you can garage both then see my notes below)

I've done both: had an M4 and X5 5.0 then switched to F90 (single vehicle). For simplicity of cleaning, daily usage(moving stuff around), insurance, taxes, etc I like having one vehicle. This is such a personal preference question that there is no right or wrong answer. Be thankful you have the choice and then go with what makes most sense for you at this point in time in your life.

M5 is the ultimate daily driver and road trip car. If you want a sports car, get the M2. If you want an ultra fast luxury car, get the M5.

I had an M2 for about a year before trading it on the M5 (was waiting on All wheel drive M5 for YEARS). The M2 was fun and great for daily drive. I got snow tires for it and it was fine in the snow, much like my '97 M3 was.

The M5 is a very different car, so the comparison is silly. Having one car is simpler. I have a Q7 as my really-bad-weather-don't-want-my-M5-hit-by-a-non-snow-tire-person-or-unplowed-middle-of-the-night car. But I'd be fine with just the M5. I drove Audi RS6 in all sorts of bad snowy weather as my only car for about 14 years. Snow Tires Matter.

If you drive the M5/M5 comp, you'll forget about the X3 and the M2 pretty quickly and never look back.

Road trip car? Nah too small for a road trip with kids in the back.

I have to admit, I found his comment to be somewhat suspect.

Appreciate all the thoughts and counter thoughts guys. Somehow they make me feel sane again by reminding me that either choice would be just fine.

Yup, I'm a year and a bit in... put too many miles on it so I'm getting another one.

I'm 1,300 miles into it and wish I went M2 or used 911 plus a wrangler. M5 does a perfect job at what its built to do and that's cruising 150 down the autobahn. It's a hard transition if you're used to quick and nimble.

100% go for the M2. The M5 is a great DD and handles well, but I would say that the X3 M40i already does the DD thing very well, and the extra cargo space can always be useful. Keep the X3 and add an M2 to your stable, the M2 is the BEST BMW on sale today, and harkens back to the older days of M, a true Ultimate Driving Machine. Also, make sure to get a 6MT Small, nimble, and fun cars like the M2 (especially with a manual) are going the way of the dodo, so why not enjoy it while it lasts, I made my decision earlier this month to say f*ck it and go for a 2 door over the 4 door, and I can't wait till I finally get my M2 (waiting for Boxster lease to end)

So to summarize, you've had neither?

I've had the pleasure of driving an M5 (not competition but loaded regular M5) for 3 days and I've driven around a track in one, and I've driven an M2 for 4 days and also tested both a competition and non-comp on track and autocross.

The OP asked a question, and I answered based on my experience. M5 is a great car, but we all know that the M2 is the best driving BMW, and why not have two BMW's over one? Especially since it will offer the best of best worlds. The X3 for DD-ing and hauling cargo/family, and the M2 for fun and backroads. I honestly think OP would have more fun owning both an X3 M40 and M2 over just an M5, just my $0.02.

Disagree completely. Took a road trip with both kids and wife for 4 hrs up and back. All said they were more comfortable and had same room as our cayenne. My kids are younger but still...

OP, if you want two vehicles... then go that route. I love driving manuals and need one for my track weekends. If I was to go down to one car, the M5 wouldn't be a bad option - though I'd miss driving a manual.

The M2 is slow. My last 2 daily drivers have been over 700 and 645 hp respectively... I can't see being happy with anything under 500 hp. My wife's SUV has nearly 500 hp... but that's me (horsepower junkie). I only care about handling when I'm on the track, and again - unless the M2 has some serious modifications - I would be bored in less than a month. I drove my M5 in the EU for the euro delivery for just over 1,100 miles and I was highly impressed with the handling on a car with such a heavy curb weight. For a daily driver, I did a lot of research and could have picked up just about anything and I don't see many cars beating the M5 for what it does so well - comfort, luxury, technology and performance.

Same, the car is plenty big - my kids were in the back seat from Munich to Slovenia - no complaints. I would be comfortable in the back seat.

The M2 is slow to you because you own multiple 500+ horsepower cars, so that makes sense in your case, but the OP only has an X3 M40i so it likely won't be as slow in feeling as your situation would, plus a fun and nimble car can easily distract you from speed.

I always prefer fun driving dynamics over speed/0-60 times, but everyone has different preferences. I still think having an SUV and a sports coupe is a great solution as it really does give the best of both worlds

Yeah. Mine hate it. They prefer the escalade over the M5.
