Engine setting Sport vs Sport Plus

I tried using the search function but couldn't come up with anything.

Can someone please tell me what the actual difference is between these 2 settings. Couldn't find anything in the manual either.

Thanks!

Just more boost in Sport+ and shorter accelerator peddle movement.

I could be wrong but...I'm pretty sure the boost does not change.

Valves stay open I think.
The burbles are super addicting, LOL.

Sure is! I think it's weird that we can't find anywhere, exactly what the differences are.

It stays in gear much longer and never seems to want to shift to 8.

In sport+, I’m sure the pops and bangs are achieved by fuel being fired into the exhaust mainifolds at the correct moment. Has anyone noticed, that if you sit there and free rev the engine, the pops and bangs only last so long, before you have to let it idle for a few seconds, before being able to reproduce the pops and bangs again.
I’m sure there is no more boost introduced in sport+ either, it just senses more movement of the throttle pedal, allowing quicker revving for less pedal travel.

The owners manual states that M engine dynamics control affects the response of the vehicle to accelerator pedal movements. It also changes the sound characteristics of the exhaust gas system. (including the fake sound)

Within each setting, the drivelogic system settings determine how the transmission shifts.

I believe the difference w/ hanging in gears, is between settings D 1-3! The engine in comfort , sport or sport plus, is throttle response like stated above by pimpsy.

Got it. It also changes the way the exhaust works.

So basically:

1. Quicker throttle response
2. Exhaust note change
3. Must be engaged to use launch control

Anything else?

As I understand it unless it's in comfort it won't automatically shift to last gear, at least in the default settings

I do not own an M5 but have spent hours tracking one at Thermal. My understanding is the regular Sport mode has some delay built into the throttle map to make the vehicle more smooth and stable when getting on/off throttle. Sport Plus does not have much if any delay built into the throttle. This is why Sport Plus mode can feel jerky sometimes.

Engine:
Comfort - smooth power delivery with pedal, least aggressive fuel mapping
Sport - the happy medium
Sport+ - most aggressive power delivery (sensitive pedal), most aggressive fuel mapping, adds exhaust burbles

Transmission:
D1 -> D2 -> D3 from slowest and smoothest (will shift gears at lower rpm), to quickest and harshest shifting (will remain in current gear thru higher rpm)
S1 -> S2 -> S3 same as above, but for manual shifting

Launch control wise, you must also be in S3 w/ dsc off. Even though she's in S3, it will change gears automatically.

I'd agree with him on that. The transmission downshifts more aggressively so braking smoothly can get tricky.

Correct. Didn’t see the “engine” word in the op’s title. Sorry about that!
