Good luck with that and I hope they do it but so far that has been a no-go for 8-series owners. Please keep us posted as if your dealer does revert back to the older iDrive version I'll be pressing my dealer to get me back to 11/2019.55 which was glorious on the M850i from an exhaust note perspective. Sure I'll lose the latest and greatest features: Android Auto, enhanced navigation and enhanced BMW Assistant but I'll walk away from them with zero remorse if I can get my exhaust sound back that made me fall in love with the car in the first place.

Yea, BMW's TT V8s honestly sound a bit dull to begin with, if you start taking away additional volume and the burble tune, the car will really lose a large part of its identity and any emotion you get from driving the thing.

Dealerships can't flash back with ISTA, they don't even can't choose the Software, they flash the newest available.

You can flash back with E-Sys only...

I also go to BMW sterling and they said no when I asked.

Ok so looked into this. Do you have a link with the proper coding I will need to upload to the ecu to revert the sound?

I have the car booked in on Monday and I plan on leaving it there until they revert the software if I cant do this. The exhaust is the main reason I got the comp over the regular M5. Its simply not what I paid for right now.

I'm likely going to cancel my appointment and just wait until my next scheduled visit, which is several months out. Here's my back and forth with BMW on the recall - as expected, they did not answer the question that I asked.

Mine has burbles. 21 M5C. Took delivery a few days ago. So it has the update. But it's not as pronounced as the F80 but I'm still happy about the exhaust sound. Interested in how it breaks in. I might do an exhaust upgrade from IND

The backfire is not exactly completely eliminated, just muffled and not as loud. It's a noticeable difference, but still sounds great. You'd only be able to notice the difference if you had an M5C before the change. Mine is in the shop now and they're working with BMW tech support to see if they can revert to the previous software version. I'm not holding my breath.

correct, he's 100% right. Also the car used to roar and pop in bang in every mode.

Now it only does it in sport or sport plus. and if you have the car in sport plus with the automatic in sport too; I'd say it's about a 50-60% reduction in the number of times and volume of the pops and bangs.
my buddy is a bmw tech and he agreed.

I asked the rep to check with service on this - but I'm going to cancel the appointment regardless. The service process during COVID is a mess, so if it's not a safety matter, I'm not going through that now.

May have to fork out some money on an aftermarket exhaust when this is all done. Better start banking some brownie points with the Mrs!

idk about m850i, but at least for the M5 (with m sport exhaust) you only get pops and bangs in sport plus. In comfort and sport you get the overrun sounds only (the short thunder-like sound after u lift off from a decently hard acceleration).

Exactly! I have 2019 with older software and I never had pops and bangs in Efficient or Sport mode. Only in Sport Plus, so sounds like it might not be wrong after all.... just your imagination

There's no chance an actual BMW dealer will revert back to the prior software once the new compliant software is installed. This is a huge liability for BMW, and progress as well as issues are likely being monitored by govt agencies, and will for some years. A dealer would likely get in a lot of trouble with the manufacturer if they did a reversion given the circumstances.

FWIW, I have an "updated" 2021 car and teh burbles and pops with the exhaust noise button On (not necessarily in Sport VS Sport Plus) I get all the pops burbles and bangs that I'd want. now, I also have the MPE which sounds sweeeet.

19' M5C with older software here as well and bangs and pops only in Sport + .. been this way since Day 1.

iPE cat-back really gives this car an amazing exhaust tone .. this car is very muted from the factory.

No i believe hes talking about the m850i, not the M5. So you can't make a comparison there.

You have the MPE, so it can't possibly be that bad. But for the rest of us with normal or m sport exhausts, it would be a different story.

Not sure about 850i. But from my experience with M4, M2comp, M2cs, M8 and my M5 as of recent, they all behave exactly the same:
-Efficient, exhaust flaps closed, no burbles.
- Sport, exhaust flaps open, no burbles.
-SportPlus, exhaust flaps open, with burbles (pops and bangs or whatever else people call them).

I think the M5 owners are complaining after the software update the pops and bangs in sport plus are reduced in frequency/volume. Are you still on the old software? Did you do the recall yet? If you plan on doing the recall and letting the dealer update your car's software in the process, let us know if it changes the sound and burbles in any way.

I have software from September.

Not planing to go anytime soon for this recall.

Last recall they did, did more harm than good. When I got the recall for back-up camera, the 3D image of the car you get in the 360 view, instead of M5, now shows me a base 5 series. Went back few times to fix it, but they were never able to figure out how to revert the image back, so I just gave up.

Potentially going and getting my ecu locked, loosing my burbles, getting flagged for piggy and etc, I don't want to deal with that. So I'll pass on these recalls for now

Yea I think I'll also skip the recall and tell them for all future visits to the dealer to not touch my software (and obviously no wash). Sigh.
