I have seen quite a few people using Redline oil, what weight would you run in the hot state of Texas?

Personally I would use 0 30, or 0 40.

Having said that, due to possible warranty stuff BMW may say, U used 0 40 and that did something.
After warranty I would for sure use 0 40 though
zero weight just flows better then 5W even though you might not be in minus temps. ( better for quick start ups and trip to the local store.)

Why red line? Its expensive, doesnt carry the BMW certification, and isnt anything special. I would just stick with the oem oil or something like castrol 0w40 which is LL-01 certified and probably the best all around euro oil.

I ended up going with the 0W30 as recommended by Redline, and it does shows BMW LL01 approved.

Are you sure it is approved? On the red line website it says the 0w30 is "suitable for" LL-01 but not approved. Per their site, the only approved oil they make for gas bimmers is a 5w40.

Anyway, Im sure your engine will be fine but just be aware that you may not be running an approved oil.

On the german forums THE best oil to use was the Mobile 1 New Life 0W-40.

Since they changed the list of additives and composition they lost a lot of customers (at least from the BMW forums) which right now are either using the Motul 8100 X-max 0W-40 or the new kid in town, the RAVENOL SSL 0W-40 which apparently now has great characteristics since they changed the composition for the better.

But the selection gets pretty small due to LL-04 specifications.

Friend of mine been using Motul X-Cess 8100 5w40 on his past 2 M5/M6 S63TU, RS7 and blackstone came back with positive result. I would prob go with a Motul 8100 5w40 for summer and 0w40 for winter. There's an engine builder on BMW's V10 who swears on Redline 5w50

0W flows better anyway why not run it full time ? Every cold start it will lube better. no matter the temp.

I'm using bmw's free 0w30 oil so far in my M3 (1year+ with shorter intervals) and same on the F90 ..

The problem is, oil runs much hotter on the V8 so probably better to do Redline 0w40, Liqui Moly 0w40 or Motul 0w40 for sure if people are driving it hard often. Cut the oil change interval as well

Under the hood is this sticker stating the recommended blend; I think I’m going to stay that route.

Anyone tried AMSOIL? I've used the signature series in a lot of my other cars for years and not a single problem. I noticed they make a 5W-30 for "boosted" vehicles and European specific oils. Not entirely sure which one would apply best to the F90 M5?

That Mobil 1 Oil is not available in the US now per Mobil 1 today.

Sure please do. On the red line website it does not list this oil as LL01 approved but rather "suitable for" as I noted earlier.

While not in English, I assume the bottle says "recommend for" and not "approved" for. This may seem like a minor point but it is the difference between an oil being actually approved and verified as meeting the oem spec vs simply being "recommended " for by the manufacturer of the oil. Red line in particular has marketed like this for years. In this instance, red line would like you to take their word for it that their oil is suitable for use in applications calling for an LL-01FE spec.

Not saying the red line oil won't work just fine in your car, but it does not actually carry the oem approval if that is something important to you.

For reference, here is a quick screen shot from the Motul website for one of their popular euro oils. It uses the word "approved " when referring to the oem specs listed since Motul actually has their oil tested and is verified to meet the oem specs.

In the manual it is written that as long as the oil has the LL-04 specifiation it is allowed to use/add:

0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40

Funny enough my dealer does not think the same... it must be LL-04 0W-30 or I'll lose my warranty!

The oil reaches temperatures around 120 °C -> 248 fahrenheit

Thus a -40 would be better imho and give me peace of mind.

Neither BMW Switzerland nor BMW M GmbH in Germany were able to answer my question why I am not allowed to use a LL04 5W-40 and why I'll lose warranty if I would do so.
