Regarding settings...any full software update should reset everything to default.
Newer cars back up their settings through connected drive...and should automatically restore your profile settings for you after the update. Older cars (like mine) have to back up their profile onto a USB stick and restore after the update. No change to my exhaust sound. The heater fan seems faster than before the update and now is set to one fan symbol to stop it being too fast. The GPS tracking was reset to off after the update and I reset to on. |

For people debating whether to get the update who have earlier cars pre mid 2019.
You currently are able to tune the car via OBD, the update will remove that ability and wipe any map you currently have on the car. So this may be a deciding factor for you. |

Thanks for the heads up on this and how did you find that out? So are you saying they have somehow locked the engine management system as I understand there is some difficulty now with younger models (2021) etc? Hmm another interesting reason why maybe not to touch it. Always something...…

2020 model. I didn't lose my profile, but did lose some of the settings on that profile, like M1 and M2 settings and a few other odds and ends like some HVAC settings and, of course all my Bimmercode changes. I definitely could tell a difference with the exhaust. I normally drive in D2 and had plenty of burbles and pops but after the update, the only way I could get any burbles and pops was in S2 (or S3). However, after a few hundred miles of driving, it is back to the way it was before the update. It's as if adaptive engine management software just took some time to relearn my driving style. I know my E92 has adaptive engine software like that, but I don't remember anyone talking about whether this car has it. Anyone know if this M5 has adaptive engine management?

Some people report still being on an older istep which allows mapping via obd but it’s a risk, not sure if it’s more recent cars that have had the update as they’ve been offering the vent recall since October last year but only now pushed the notification to the cars in the UK. |

Oh man...I just realized that I need this recall update.
2019 M5C...is it going to wipe out all my custom programming?? No Maps...just coding for settings, lights, etc. Sigh...

None of these blocked the OBD. It can happen on newer cars but for my granny 2018 I was fine. I can still connect using obd with femto/bm3 and any other diagnostic tools without problems. |

From a Uk perspective, I have spoken with dealer on the fuel vent recall, I was told it is not urgent and can be done when vehicle next in for annual service. So that tells me this is not safety related on recall, but like others here have said, more to do with emissions tracking. Also in the Uk there is a warning to motorists as the UK pls to bring in E10 unleaded fuel this year and it could damage engines, so be warned & careful out there!

I’ve decided not to get the update and instruct the dealership not to update it in future when in for any service work.
I am now tuned and don’t want to lose the ability to tune as a result. I know for a fact that at least one early car has went in for update and come out with the newer istep blocking obd. I guess it’s a lottery as to whether it’s going to lock the port or not. |

I don't see any point tuning a warrantied 600+ hp 4.4l V8 twin turbo car for normal use either, so they can block what they want as far as I'm concerned. |

BMW are looking also at "Tuned /ecu" alteration. PS) BMW Voided a mates 2019 F90 M5 engine and ancillaries due to a re-map. Be warned.

As to the recall, mine is due next Friday but as a pre-OPF and with the M Sport Exhaust I am increasingly reluctant to have it done, for fear of losing that amazing exhaust sound. Still not clear to me if the pops & bangs are lost on a European pre-OPF car. |
