Rear diffuser
Has anyone had this issue where the rear diffuser in gloss black fades? I just noticed this the other day on my M5C and wasn't too happy. I have no idea why just that piece would fade. Thanks and please let me know!

Haven’t seen that on the forum. How many miles on the car? Is it outside in the sun all the time?
Typically plastic trim gets faded by sun exposure. If that’s what it is you can remove a lot of the oxidation with a tire/rubber cleaner which helps bring back the black look. Then ceramic coat it to help protect against recurrence. If it’s really bad you can get a trim restorer kit like this that actually puts black pigment back into the trim piece and ceramic coats it. https://adamspolishes.com/products/c...30207961858145 |

Unless you're the original owner of the car? Maybe previous owner had a carbon fiber version and removed before trading or selling? Ive also seen some people paint the OEM one to be color matched or different variations (which looks terrible). Of course if you are the original owner of the car that would de-bunk that, and could just be a defect. Or maybe it was replaced at some point and never painted to begin with? Do they come just black primer colored plastic from BMW if it's replaced? I dont know, but it shouldn't be fading unless there is something else in play here. But, im I live in AZ, and while my car is garaged the majority of the time, it still sees a lot of sunlight, and not a hint of fade on mine, unless the entire black piece is faded on mine evenly to match the diffuser. |

It’s very possible it is an actual OEM bmw part, but still been replaced due to some one backing up into to something or other type of damage. I don’t believe they come painted when replaced. So if someone replaced it and had a poor paint job done on it, or not painted at all that would be the issue. The rest of the black insert I would imagine is original. It’s possible That insert is original also just painted outside of the factory for some reason. Damage it wanted a different color and changed mind who knows . But that’s my guess |

Hard to tell in the photo, it looks glossy based on some of the shadows and highlights, but for clarification is the piece more matte in its fading ?
Like not just the color turning grey-ish, but is the finish also dulling? not as glossy ? This photo almost appears it is like a black plastic piece and not even painted at all. Much like it would be on some cars with black bumpers or wheel well trim the is just black plastic? It almost looks like it's a piece from a gray car. It's very odd. Because if it was like UV fading from sun exposure etc, I would think it wouldn't fade evenly like that. Like the part that sees the most sun would be more faded than say the bottom of it. Pull it off and see if it's a BMW OEM part, and if it's even painted. If the car is under warranty maybe they would replace it, maybe there was a batch of these that got bad paint? Very odd part to fade especially where it's located on the car. even in sunny climates I would think that area wouldnt be fading much from UV. |

I just replaced mine with a carbon fiber diffuser. It had started doing the same thing and it’s OEM. Not near as bad as that, but it has started the fading process.

Definitely isn't right....if they won't replace it, just wrap it in gloss black.
That diffuser is the same material as the black plastic piece above and around it....so it's odd that piece is fine.
