I'm 16 with an '06 325i and yeah, it's a nice car that I'm in absolute love with. But I make the payments on the thing and I got it for 16k with 6 months of CPO warranty still on it. That's what a new Ford Fiesta or something of the sort would cost with a couple options added on, but nobody would give a kid hell for that, even if their parents paid the thing in full. Can't say I'm bugged though. I wouldn't be ashamed to tell people what you drive. It's a car... If someone is going to give you attitude because you drive a BMW, they should evaluate their mind a bit. I could be 20x more of an asshole driver with some old Ford than I am with my BMW. I find that I actually pleasantly surprise people on the road with my attitude when I stop to let them get out of a driveway or whatnot. Don't think I've been honked at once in my bimmer. Be proud of what you drive! You work hard to pay for it. Who cares what anyone has to say about that. |

Threads like this are posted here with reliable regularity. Most of them seem to be written using the same boilerplate, with some minor differences here and there. This one says "...and their eyes get wide...". The previous one (which quite a few people here should remember, I'm sure) said "...the tone of their voice changes (when I causally whip out my BMW key) ..." or something along those lines. And so on
Hilarious. Sorry, guys, I understand many of you have a very vivid imagination and quite a penchant for self-deception, but trust me: in reality nobody's eyes get wide and nobody's tone of their voice changes. Learn to live with it. Last edited by AndreyT; 12-15-2011 at 03:54 PM.. |

trust me..."our penchant for self-deception" is a lot lower than other's preconceived notions that BMW drivers are dooshbags (I'm still convinced that they're right ). Go to a forum on a more modest car brand and take a poll...9 out of 10 guys will say you're an over-privileged dink for buying a BMW.

"What do you drive?"
"BMW, its awesome, you should take it for a rip!" usually ends any negative comments quickly, because it usually is followed by "really!?" "Sure, makes my day everytime I get in it" |

As expected, the responses are:
it's not so special where I live = I live in a super duper wealthy area. I'm awesome. My income is also in line with the avg income in my city and I want you to know that. Be proud of what you drive = fuck the haters, flaunt it Whatever, hot girls dig it and I bang them = I'm 17 and have yet to touch a boob that isn't my moms. Whatever bro, we drive POS cars...why would anyone be impressed by a 3 series, let alone a BMW? = by slamming on our 3 series, I am really trying to tell everyone here that I'm used to having and seeing far more expensive things. Also, see response 1 translation. Me too man = Me too man |

I 100% agree with OP. I love cars this is second BMW because I Love them.
I tell people a Camry (wives car). If I drive to appointment I will normally take her car to avoid the "stuckup" stigma.

Dude im 17 i get that feeling too.
I think I've met a stuck up a$s hole bmw driver, i was selling my htc hd7 in the box CF in mint condition for $50 on craigslist. anyways so dude texts me and wants to meet somewhere to buy it I'm like yeaaas! (needed the money) so afraid i was gonna get mugged driving my bmw or the dude was gonna ask it for free or something cuz i appear to be "rich", so i take my Beater Truck (first car). we meet and i got there before he did. so he pulls up in an E60 5 series, and I'm thinking nice!. didn't see the numbers on the back so i was just wondering if he had the 535i so we can talk turbos LOL or if he has the same state of mind like most of us on these forms. so i asked him "is it a 535i with turbos" he said hell no i just got this thing and it was freaking expensive...i think it was like an 04.... and he said its a "525i" then he looks back at my car with a smirk and chuckles haha is THAT your car. ( i live in a rich area too) i said "why yes", he rolled his eyes and asked for the phone i was like okay... so he trys to talk me down $25 i said hell no he was like fine, as he's walking away he mumbles POS You and your Car( i heard him).... i wanted to yell "back i drive a bmw too! probably 3 times worth your car, Plus i Paid 35,000 CASH!" but like he'd believe it.. so i get in my truck and drive away. Mumbling FKIN DOuche BAG.....i didn't like that guy he wasted my time... told this to a Friend and he told me to text him back that i would sell the phone for $25, show up with the 335 Egg his car and TAKE OFF wit the turbos!! My lovely TRUCK (seriously i love this thing) driving this to school every day sophomore - half of senior year, other half of senior year showed up in an E93 |

I don't support the argument that you could of got a Honda Accord, etc. because their repair and maintenance costs are much cheaper.
I say a 3 series. It's different. When I say 3 series I think of one of the best selling cars. When I say BMW I think of rich people. As for that NYT Article, this caught my attention. Quote:

OK, Here goes... (long time lurker here- first post)
Just got my 335xi 3 weeks ago and I have DEFINITELY experienced something different from people than I did in my previous rides. I traded up from a Lexus GS350awd, which was great but the e90 drives incredibly! What a difference. I also got pulled over in my first week on the way to work but the state trooper was cool and said, "that must be a smooth ride", when I explained that I didn't realize that I was 10+mph over the limit. That was cool. Anyway, I like the suggestion early in this thread about replying with "just a 3 series" the next time I'm asked what I drive. Great forum and I'm stoked to be here! |
