Is Thermo-tec necessary for Akra Evo System?

I am a new owner of the Evolution system (fantastic service from Nate at IND!) - I will be installing it this weekend - will post the results!

I have heard that the Thermo-Tec Clamp On Exhaust Heat Shields is recommended to prevent possible damage to the rear axle boots - Is that true? I am confused because some experts say it is best to install while others say it is not necessary.

Also I have noticed quite a few owners putting up their used Akra systems for sale - I wonder why?

Your expertise would be much appreciated!

it never hurts to put up a little extra protection. When you take off your stock system you will see that the factory system has heat shields on it.

It's not really necessary.

It'll help keep the heat away from that area for sure to preserve the rear axle boots.

The only ones I've seen for sale come off of cars that are being sold or parted out for some other similar reason. It may also be because as far as aftermarket exhausts go, this one is on the quieter side. It's louder than stock, but not as loud as some prefer.

Cheers.

i have a bastuck exhaust with no heat shields. i go to the track quite often and so far, i've had no issues with the rubber boots melting due to heat. i am sure theres no harm to putting the heat shields on but its not really needed.

I would opt for the conservative approach. The OEM system has them. They would not use it if not required. I would add one with any aftermarket system. Now I should qualify that. If the aftermarket design happens to keep the tubing much further away from the axle boots then you would probably be OK not having the shields.

It's less than 100 bucks to put something on that might save your car from more expensive repairs. BMW put some heatshields their pipes and you'd think that they might know something from all the testing that they've done. Why would they do this? If you don't do this, you're being cheap and in the wrong way. Just don't bother modifying if you can't spend the money to do it right.
