Great video. Hands down these guys are some of best automotive journalists out there. Surprised that it's as fast as the GT3RS.

The brake pads are really going to hate stopping 4K lbs from 160 mph in comparison to the Porsche though. Expensive track day for the M5. Slower? I'd say a little but it's not the turning ability, it handles great. It's all brake time. The other factor here is M5 and the new bmw lineup in general is massive dimension wise. If you read interviews from the race car drivers they comment on how easy the M8/M6 are to drive properly compared to its rivals. They handle very well and the size makes them very easy to control at the limit. The AWD makes the 600 hp easy to control. Porsche 911s are the opposite, very tough to tame due to the set up, and have 500 hp going to 2 wheels. You're seeing the M5 best the 911 GT3 RS because an amateur gentlemen driver TV personality was playing around for a few hours with both. The M5 is extremely easy to master and the 911 is the opposite. If you put Timo Bernhardt or a Porsche factory driver against Alexander Sims where both cars are driven perfectly by skilled drivers who drive the cars for a living the 911 will best the M5. Better power to weight ratio and 900 lbs less weight to slow down. For mortal drivers at a for fu mn track day though I'd bet the M5 is much easier to drive a fast lap. |
