My new M5 Competion
I picked up my new M5 Competition over the new year break - DG over Tartufo. Having had chance to put about 500 miles on it, I feel like I have got to know the car reasonably well but look forward to getting more experience with it.
I have owned both a F10 and E60 M5 (each for c2.5 years) with a 2011 GTR between those two cars and an RS6 for the last 3.5 years. The E60 was my favourite I have owned, the F10 was a disappointment (as was the GTR). Engine and drivetrain I would start by saying that I am still within the run-in period for the F90 and have been keeping to the run-in guidelines. I did the same with all my prior cars and have been fortunate enough to have no issues with any of them so don't want to break that trend. That said, I can tell already that the engine character is more like the the E60 than any of the other cars I have owned since - it is clearly turbo-ed but encourages you to open it up far more than the Audi, Nissan or even the F10. The gearbox is similar to the RS6 - changes may be slightly better than the Audi and marginally slower than the DCT boxes of the F10 or GTR but the elasticity of the engines in all the cars means all those gearboxes are very good. The exhaust on the comp model is lovely from outside but too muted from within - I have been driving with the window down when possible to enjoy the sound more. Ride and Handling I have seen comments on this board about the comp suspension being too stiff. I dont know what those people were driving before or if their cars have some problem, but for me the comp suspension provides an excellent balance between comfort and handling. I spent a couple of days with a non-comp F90 before deciding on the comp model and the responsiveness of the comp on initial turn-in and balance under neutral load through longer corners is a significant step up vs the standard model. I picked up my car in Edinburgh and drove the A68 which has some phenomenal sweeping corners as well as some tighter bends and lots of gradient changes. The control of the car with the suspension set on sport was excellent. The GTR would handle some of those conditions slightly better but would get more out of shape on sudden camber changes. Dropping into comfort in the F90 provides easy driving when on the motorway or more damaged roads in town. Exterior / interior Although looks are clearly subjective, the RS6 is undoubtedly a more aggressive looking car. The bulging arches and squat stance of the Audi makes the F90 look tame by comparison. I opted for the M performance sills to give the car more visual width - although they are subtle they measurably change the stance of the car. I originally specced by F90 in Rhodinite over Amaro based upon online pictures. I then called into a dealer again to review samples of each and found the Rhodinite too flat (it looked like a very standard silver) and Amaro too orange. I changed to DG over full tartufo and couldn't be more happy. DG is a beautiful colour - it has great depth without being too attention-seeking. The full tartufo leather (which I paired with dark carbon inserts) looks stunning - I especially like the tartufo stitching running along the top of the dash and doors. As has been said many times - the seats are superb. Having collected my car in Edinburgh I had a 7 hour journey back to London with just a short stop for fuel and did not feel any discomfort. The comp details (black grill / gills, spoiler etc) look great against DG and the removal of the chrome door handle inserts is a welcome change (always frustrated me on my F10). Tech Each generation of cars moves things along with the technology and the F90 is no exception. Mine has the regular stereo (I am no audiophile), but it is ok. The phone integration is excellent and it is the first car where I have actually used voice control, which is a big step forward from pervious versions and actually works. iDrive is intuitive as always and stuff just works easily. I opted against the radar cruise control - the system makes the front of the car ugly (IMHO) and I used it only a handful of times on my RS6. I have the display key and have not yet used it - just too large and completely unnecessary / useless. A few pictures... |

Fantastic Matey,
Really like that, you have chosen well. I love the Tartufo colour, its so rich and creamy, and suits Donington well. Agree on your sentiments regarding suspension stiffness, its no problem at all, and i found it handled UK back roads very well, with no undue harshness and compliant enough. Sport does a great job of being firmer, but still ultra controllable in the chassis department. Keep us informed of your progress |

I agree with you about the radar on the front bumper of the Driver's Assistance package, makes a beautiful front look ugly.

Beautiful! Having come over to BMW from Audi (I had previously driven a 2014 and 2017 RS7) I agree with everything you said. The nod goes to the F90 for Engine (esp the exhaust sound), handling and obviously tech. I still think the RS7 is a beautiful car and looked very menacing in daytona grey but the ride quality and exhaust note from the f90 is unmatched.
Having said that I just read off the rumour mill and if true I might be tempted to go back to Audi as the RS6 has always been a unicorn car for us North Americans who have been deprived of fast Audi wagons: https://carbuzz.com/news/exclusive-a...vant-to-the-us |

Hey Dumbo:
Awesome spec. Still liking Donnington over Tartufo? I thought I wanted Azurite over Tartufo or Donnington over Black. Now I want Donnington over Tartufo. You really messed me up, man. More pics please. |
