F90 M5 Becomes Fastest Sedan Ever in Car and Driver Lightning Lap 2018

Car and Driver has published the results of its annual Lightning Lap competition and the F90 M5 is now the quickest sedan ever at Lightning Lap!

Quote:
The M5’s flexible engine plays a large part in making its quickness approachable. All 553 pound-feet of torque are available between 1800 and 5700 rpm, and the engine remains ardent all the way to its 7200-rpm redline. But the M5 is less aggressively tuned than the E63. Its larger V-8 lacks the E’s barking exhaust note. It doesn’t try to back into every corner like the AMG sedan does. We set our quickest time with the M5’s all-wheel-drive system in its standard setting rather than in Sport, which allows more yaw before activating the front axle.

Despite a better weight-to-power ratio (it’s about 300 pounds lighter than the E63), the M5 is 2.4 mph slower down the front straight than the AMG. But it almost completely erases its 0.5-second deficit in sector one by the bottom of the Climbing Esses, leaving it just 0.1 second behind the E63 after the track’s most speed-critical complex. The BMW regains that tenth before entering the downhill Spiral, making this limousine battle a dead heat with the most technical sections of the lap remaining. The M5 starts to edge the E63 climbing out of the infield, where it’s 0.3 second quicker before it gives up a tenth of a second through Hog Pen and past the start/finish to settle with a 0.2-second advantage.

Only if it had any feeling to go with that speed. And yes I have driven it several times.

Damn! Not the Comp either! I would really want to see what the Comp would do. The added chassis refinement and suspension/steering upgrades would have a significant effect here. HP added not so crucial IMO.

When I was young I saw the ad of E39 with filming camera in desert, For me "Fastest sedan" has been M5 since then and even now.
I will not be surprised if next gen M5 will be one and so on.

You must be talking about this one.
What an epic commercial and still one of the best to come from BMW.
No fancy stats or specs. Only results.

That said, it's certainly a welcoming piece of news that the F90 clocked the fastest time for a sedan at Car & Driver's Lightning Lap.

It's quite a feat being able to engineer the M5 to be that much lighter than its competitors, even with the addition of the M xDrive system.

Yep. The F90 was on my short list until I drove it at M Track Days. It is quite possibly one of the most boring cars I have driven.

Just like others have said, the car is incredibly fast for what it is but it is so numb. It's great for bad drivers though cause it will correct their mistakes.

Also I am shocked at how fast the mustang is. What all comes with the performance pack 2?

That mustang time is impressive.

Drive the M5 for our time lapped at the M School at thermal and it was really capable. But the M3/4 was better

I don't know the details, but I am sure it was helped along by the packages Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires in a 305 square setup.
The ZL1, Ford GT, GT2 RS, and GT3 were also all on Sport Cup 2's. The M5 and Cayman GTS were on Pilot Sport 4S's.

It says the E63 is faster on the strait by 2.4 mph? So in a straight line the M5 is slower?

Omg I forgot about this.

+1 for the days when BMW commercials made your spine tingle.

They've gotten a bit "impotent" in this day and age.

Those are cars tested in 2018. The M4/M2 I think put down 3:00/3:01. M4 GTS was something like 2:52.

It seems that the days of a truly connected and raw sedan are gone.

All 3 German automakers make these super fast V8 powered sedans that feel pretty much the same to drive.

A better driver could've gotten a quicker lap time.

The M5 looked glued to the road. I heard no wheel slippage. It looked competent and totally in control. Awesome, now bring that technology into all the M vehicles please!

I would suggest locating the pedal on the right, and then giving it a good push.

It's basically the 1LE competitor.
