That's weird, how do the make the overall car sound different without changing gpf or exhaust ??!

I prefer the post update...I might get the software updated on my non cp car to see if I can lose the pops/bangs etc.

Virtually no overrun noise on the second, which implies different software. As for the overall volume/tone it is possible different recording equipment is making it sound different and quieter than it is.

However, if those who have taken delivery of the latest model are convinced it is notably quieter than the previous version that they test drove then the chances are it is different.

I made both recordings with the same phone

Assuming both cars were up to full operating temperature, exhaust and engine setttings on max, thus flaps fully open, then there must be more noise suppression somewhere in the emission control systems and/or exhaust.

It is not out of the question for manufacturers to revise/upgrade parts and retain the same part #.

Sounds a bit unlikely...how would anyone at BMW know which part was which if they kept the same part number?

That's the point, they don't want you to know. If a part has been changed for the better and the preference is for all vehicles to receive the same part then there is no need to change the part number. It happens more often than you think. I have seen parts with the same oem part number look different.

I am not saying this is the case with the exhaust but it is plausible.

They have done this in the past. Anyone that changes the part gets the updates whether they want them or not.

That just doesn't make sense to me. What are they gonna do with all the thousands of stock parts? They won't be able to distinguish old of new parts, so it would be an entire chaos. Moreover we are talking about parts which potentially have been changed due to regulations, so BMW is required by law to get rid of them. My dealer doesn't received an information concerning such an issue..

No update, car remains quiet, no resolve from BMW (nor is there likely to be one) Mt dealership is working on a compensation package for the exhaust only cost of the competition pack, will update later this week.

I remain gutted, I will review other options outside of BMW as the car sounds almost silent in comparison to the pre September MPE.

Listened to an M5 today with the M Performance Exhaust and it had plenty of off throttle drama. The non performance exhaust was very tame even compared to my old X3 M40i. Easy to solve with $7K!

My 2020 definitely doesn't pop like that in sport+ with valves open from just revving. I'm actually stoked on that! I'll add my sound through DP's and Exhaust.

I just think they made a change in the software. Probably too many customer complaints of the pops and bangs.

My 2020 Competition in Sport+ with valves open makes lots of noise (pops, crackles, etc.). Maybe it has something to do with how you rev your engine? A friend of mine sat in my car and couldn't get the same noises because he wasn't letting off the pedal quickly enough.

Hi DGillies.. I'm gutted for you.. the 2020 (EU) model has definitely lost some of the theatre.

Please let me know how you get on.. I'm going round in circles with BMW and my dealer... getting nowhere..

Also, what other options are you looking at? New rear box? ECU tune?

I must admit, I'm not too bothered about not having the pops&bangs.. a bit more 'grumble' would do me and I hope this can be partly resolved with a 3rd party axle back exhaust.. (I won't risk my warranty on a cat back).

Mine is starting to get a little louder now I'm close to the run in mileage.. In sports+, operating temperature, 2nd or 3rd gear, 4-5000 revs and let off.. it does grumble on occasion. Nothing like the 2019 model but maybe there is a little hope once it beds in a bit..
