BMW NA, Meh!

I've been trying to get in touch with my rep at BMW NA. I got a phone call on Wednesday without Caller ID and blew it off. Then I got an email which showed the phone number which was BMW NA. I called it. It's an annoying computer voice and you have to work through their crazy menu.

I have been calling the number twice daily (Wednesday, Thursday and Today) and never get in touch with the person who made the phone call and sent the email.

Is it me, or should this be pretty easy to do, you know, return a phone call? Is BMW NA so busy with car issues that they are swamped?

Mike

Do you not get a response from your rep when you e-mail them directly? Maybe they are on vacation? I'm not sure what you are trying to reach out about. Nancy McDonald @ 1-800-831-1117 ext. 5825 is the Executive Customer Relations rep for BMW NA. Basically the highest you can get in regards to escalations unless you go to the President.

I would recommend reaching out to Richie, he is an Area Director for BMW and gets literally enraged at BMW owners sending him emails to his non public facing email address. Tell him Jordan sent you.

Oh my, that sounds like asking for trouble if he is that easily triggered by customers.

My apologies, the extent of my knowledge regarding Ohio (aside from Hilliard) is a business trip I took to Toledo once.

So I emailed him. I got an email and a phone call back from another person there.

He called me today at 3:45 but I missed the call. I will call him again tomorrow. They appear to be honoring the offer they made in August. So that's good. I'll believe it when the check comes.

BMW NA reneged on paying for my battery.

My last BMW. No skin of my backside. I'll enjoy this one until it's dead or I trade it.

I will be watching as other $2000 batteries fail.

Why do you think BMW is even obligated to refund you? It would have been a nice bonus sure, but it wasn't under warranty right? If it was under a warranty, why would you ever order parts yourself?

Someone that doesn't work for BMW told you BMW would refund you. That already should set some low expectations that it might not happen unless it's the service manager saying he specifically talked to the BMW NA area manager for approval.

It's an $1,800 battery and its pretty easy to get a 10% off discount. getbmwparts sells it for $1,495. You said you don't care about the weight, so why didn't you order part number 61-21-6-805-461 that only costs ~$300?

BEGIN RANT....

I WAS TOLD BY BMW NA, BRANDON, BEFORE I PURCHASED THE (*^(*&^ BATTERY, THAT BMW NA WAS GOING TO PAY FOR IT AS A CURTESY FOR MY PRIOR MULTIPLE M CAR PURCHASES.

I ORDERED THE BATTERY MYSELF BECAUSE THE DEALER WAS COMPLETELY INEPT AND COULD NOT FIGURE IT OUT.

SO IF YOU WANT TO BE A BMW FAN BOY, GOD BLESS YOU, THAT COMPANY IS HITTING ROCK BOTTOM.

USING AN EXPENSIVE LITHIUM ION BATTERY TO SAVE A FEW POUNDS IS DUMB. FOISTING THAT REPLACEMENT COST ON THE CUSTOMER IS ASININE.

THE DEALERS REFUSAL TO INVESTIGATE, IE CALL BMW AND ASK, REPLACING BATTERY WITH A AGM BATTERY (RUMOR IS THIS CAN BE DONE) IS ASININE.

MY DAD HAD HIS BATTERY REPLACED BY HIS BMW DEALER IN MASSACHUSETTS FOR $136. HIS HAD A FAULT MESSAGE ABOUT THE INTERNAL SWITCH FAILING.

I WILL ENJOY WATCHING OTHERS CATERWAUL ABOUT THEIR BATTERY DYING.

JUST LIKE THE "DYNAMIC RIDE CONTROL" IN AUDI IN 2003, BMW WILL END UP EATING THIS ONE IN THE LONG RUN.

END RANT.

There, I feel better.

A friend had to buy a new battery for his Porsche Panamera GTS (2019) and it cost him $400. Normal AGM battery. I put a new battery in my kids civic, cost $180. BMW can drop dead with their stupid $2000 battery, jack asses.

Believe it or not, Porsche also uses a lithium ion battery in some of their cars. I believe the cars with rear wheel steering. A post I read indicated Porsche refused to pay the $2600 cost to replace the battery because the car had less than 6,000 miles.

Hmm I don't know all of the specifics but it seems like he was told by BMWNA they would reimburse him for the Li battery. In which case.. he then ordered just that. If those are the facts then I guess it seems the rep/person spoke to was full of it. I'd say get everything in writing etc. or not trust BMWNA as a lesson learned possibly.

He wasn't promised anything by BMW NA and took maters into his own hands out of frustration with working with the dealership (not BMW NA). What he could have done is look up the exact part number like I did and provide that to the dealership and go from there.

Of course BMW NA isn't going to reimburse him or the dealership for MSRP cost of something, especially when the customer circumvented the normal process.

This goes for anything, not even car related, under warranty. Why would any company reimburse you for retail cost of a part if you repair it yourself instead of the normal official process where often repair shops, authorized by the manufacturer, perform the warranty work and pay significantly less for the parts and get reimbursed for that non MSRP part cost plus the hourly rate for the time assigned to the type of repair.

BMWNA cost is approx. $348 from Lithium Energy Japan, https://www.lithiumenergy.jp/en/
There is no way BMW is going to cover your retail cost. If anything, they "MAY" cover the wholesale cost and that would be generous especially since you did not purchase through the dealer. While I agree that the price for this particular battery is outrageous, your tone and anger reasonably denotes that probably projected on BMWNA and the dealer didnt help your situation.
