Stuck! In my '22 M5

What you are about to read is a cautionary tale. It's probably the most ridiculous thing you'll read today but it happened to me so it could happen to you.

Earlier this week, one of my rear tires was down to 27lbs. I thought it might have a slow leak so I decided to drive my beater to work Monday and Tuesday. I worked from home yesterday, put some air in the tire and took it out for a ride last night to make sure the TPS reset and the air was staying in the tire. Everything looked good to go.

This morning, I hop in the M and fire it up. As I was waiting for it to kick down, I realized that I left my parking pass for my garage at work in the beater. I decided to pull my car halfway out of the garage so I could leave it running and not asphyxiate my family with the fumes. I just had to run in the house, grab the keys to my old Volvo and get the pass out of the car. I backed halfway out and opened the door. When I went to close the drivers door, it wouldn't close because the car had rolled back a few inches while the door was open. As a result, I wasn't able to close the door and as we all know, if you can't close the door, you can't put the car in gear. So I was stuck. I wasn't able to push the car back in to the garage as my driveway has a steep slope down and I have curb ramps in front of my garage door so the front end doesn't scrape when I pull in.

What to do? I called the Genius line and the agent said there was no way to defeat this "safety" feature. However, I have roadside assistance and he could transfer me to them and maybe they could come out and help me push it back in the garage so I could get it in gear and continue with my morning. Fine but not ideal.

The roadside assistance agent was willing to help once I was able to explain this ridiculous situation I got myself into. She put me on a brief hold, came back and said to start the car, pull the outside door handle 3x, then the inside door handle 3x and see if it would go into gear. Believe it or not, it did but only for a moment. It was enough to move it forward a foot or so, then it started clicking like when you put a car in park while it's rolling. I was free! I thanked the agent for her help and told her to tell the Geniuses about this hack.

This is the stupidest nanny-type "safety" feature I've ever come across.

So haven't tried this on the f90, but previous generation bmws, as long as you were in the seat and belt was buckled you could drive with door open. Mind giving that a try and reporting back?😅

The car would let you put it in gear with the door open, if you buckle your seatbelt. Have you tried that instead?

I was actually going to post this ridiculous feature on the thread recently posted "something you like & dislike about f90"

This is the dumbest thing i've ever encountered and SEVERAL times have been annoyed with this. I have never got myself stuck like this, but it is infuriating to have to close the door completely to be able to coast or slow inch forward or back. They should make it not be allowed to go over 3 or 5 MPH with door open. Because many times it would be nice to crack the door, and pour out coffee, or check a parking spot or curb whatever. But nope, open the door and the car slams to a stop. Very irritating.

The car will NOT let you move an inch with the door open, or cracked open even. It automatically puts car in park.

Example: If you say, wanted to slowly pull up in a parallel parking spot, crack the door to look at how close the curb is while parking? you cant, or you can, but the car immediately goes into park the second the door is opened.

At a stop light or something want to open the door pour out coffee, and not dump it on the side of your car? Car goes into park. Even with foot on the brake. If you don't notice, the light turns green and you hit the gas and just rev the car to redline on accident.

Really really stupid.

OP backed out, put in park to stop. Had enough room to open the door, then the car must have kind of settled a tad in park, just enough to now not be able to close the door.

The problem? You cant put the car in drive to pull forward until door is closed. Well what happens if you cant close the door like the OP? You also cant move the car. It's Stupid.

Allowing the car to at least coast or not go above 3-5MPH with door open would be a simple solution to this problem.

I dont think so. Unless im mistaken. I dont think you can do that. Having seat belt off you can drive but not with the door open to my knowledge. But I could be wrong.... now I want to check

EDIT* ill be god damned.... euro* is right!!! Put your seatbelt on, and you can put in gear. Still stupid however.... But at least theres a 1/2 solution.

OP: put your seatbelt on next time!!! LOL

I was going to try in the morning but it looks like this has been confirmed. Thanks! Could have saved me a bunch of aggravation this morning!

I also wish either the BMW Genius I spoke to knew this info.

Maybe the feature was designed to prevent the car from rolling down the hill while left briefly unattended. There's probably a reasonable intention behind the way this works related to vehicle safety.

The pics didn't load for some reason the first time I was on the page….NOW I see the issue. Mercedes is like this, too…..goes into park once door is open.

Same with my 2019 Porsche, but not sure if the 2018 M5 has this 'feature' LOL.

Now I have to check. (not going to put the car in a bad spot when I check it. LOL).

These are the kind of posts I LOVE. REAL people who have real problems (although funny), that one can see happening to them, and then SHARE it to the ENTIRE WORLD.

Bravo man, Bravo......

Glad you got it sorted out without damage.

I have to admit, when I saw the photo I thought the car rolled and the door got damaged......glad it was just 'stuck.'

Mike

I just tried this one and it works as well. Lightly step on brake, almost like trying to do a burnout, probably a little less dangerous to just put seat belt on, but at least this is another option.

Who knew?!! (Besides obviously the people who did know… )

Who knew indeed! I tried my car with seatbelt on and door open this morning and the gear will engage.

Thanks everyone! This concludes my portion of this PSA, carry on.
