So one of my buddies is looking into a used 2021 M5 and the BMW dealer said they have to charge $199 to transfer the 3-year maintenance plan over to his name, is that legit?

The first result of a Google search of 'is bmw extended maintenance transferable' says yes.

No it does not transfer. But it is only $100 so they are marking it up. It's the charge for BMW to do the paperwork to change the owner name is my understanding

I believe the service doesn't stay with the car to the second owner, so at least you can get it 're-attached' but a fee, really? What a load of crap.

The mnx plan won't transfer organically. You have to pay to have it transferred. Its typically only $100 so the dealer is marking it up for a profit.

This is a long time thing across all models.

Thanks for bringing the maintenance refresh up. We have owned BMWs new and used over the years and never knew about the maintenance refresh.

I am bringing my '21 M5, which I purchased used, in for oil change next week and spoke with the dealership who told me to speak with someone in finance when I come in for service next week regarding this.

I did try to get this through the MyBMW site, which shows it as an option, but I get an error when I try to checkout on the site after only adding it to the cart.

I had to pay $100 to change mine in my X3M, but it saved me $1800 so I didn't mind. Maybe they upcharge for the M5?

Finance will try to sell you an extended warranty, paint sealant, fabric protection, wheel warranty and an underbody spray

I've never had anyone at my grocery store try to sell me anything. I just walk in get what I want without hassle. It would be awkward if I walked in to get a bunch of fruit and veggies and before check out I had to sit in a room and decline the option to purchase bread, ice cream, and soda.

Haha no doubt. Sales is a hustle. I think sales work best for everyone when the value is there. I think a lot of the upsell is questionable value and relies on FOMO, misleading, or scaring people into making a purchase which is the nature of the beast but also kind of sucks for those who can't end up saying no.

Sometimes I think finance are bigger assholes than sales, at least it was my experience in New Jersey, or maybe it's just how people there are like.

I dropped the M5 off for service today and the service rep is going to process the maintenance refresh and confirmed it is only $100.

I was really dreading having to go through the finance persons onslaught of add-ons so glad the service rep can do it for me.
