Hello M5 community!
Glad to be finally posting after months of educating myself here!

I just purchased a 2018 M5C in nardo grey with 11k miles and I’m loving it so far! I was stuck in the SUV camp for the last 6 years due to 3 kids in 3 years but now that we’re out of the pram phase I’m glad to be back driving a proper car...

Having had a few nice cars in the past, including a TVR Tuscan S and a corvette C6, I’m no stranger to RWD cars and definitely enjoy drifting. The F90 is great as it gives you the best of both worlds, with 4WD sport a great option for carving mountain roads with safety and the 2WD option for when you want to skid about...

Which brings me to my issue... when sliding laterally it’s very smooth and very easy, even PlayStation like! But when your in RWD and you floor it in a straight line the rear end starts to HOP vigorously!!! In the wet the problem actually escalates and hops even more which doesn’t make sense to me as it should spin easier and smoother with less traction...

The only similar thing I experienced in the past was with a FWD mini JCW that needed new engine mounts which made the drivetrain flex and resonate and HOP. 2 new engine mounts and it was like new again.

I haven’t found anybody else on the forum that has had the same problem. What do you think it could be? Rear axle mounts? Subframe bushings?

Apologies for the long post but I would really appreciate any feedback. Nevertheless it’s great to be here and hopefully I will be able to contribute to this great knowledge asset here.

That's what's called wheel hop and it's bad and can break parts.
What's happening is the tires start to spin then gain traction, loose traction, gain traction over and over which makes the wheels hop.
This is because there is to much traction and not enough power to completely over power the tires.
Another thing that causes this is too stiff of suspension.
I have the same issue in my Cobra even with 650 hp in a 2600lb car.
I went to softer springs and problem solved.

Make sure suspension is in softest setting n try again. Maybe this will help but not sure. Thx

Hi Joe, thanks for the reply!
That’s what I thought but actually in the wet, where the tyres spin very easily, the wheel hop is even worse...

GTATX, I tried in all suspension settings...

I'm a new member, I've owned an m5 f90 for a while and I have a problem with wheel hop.. so, the car in straight line, 2wd, all systems disabled obviously, when accelerate the car and it starts to wheel hop it starts to limit like it had DSC on, but it is already off, so it's not about DSC... AND I DON'T TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS IN ANY FORM! Then it starts to "squeak" and change gears one after the other, skating, without problems. I repeat, it generally does this on a straight line and very rarely when it's sideways... it sometimes does this in 2nd gear when I accelerate and it does a wheel hop again and it detours/limits, after which it accelerates again. P.S. I have dashboard video, but don’t know how to upload it…

Wheel hop can destroy parts so maybe the traction control is not really fully defeated? Hop is essentially loading and unloading. I have a high power RWD car and try to avoid it — broken all sorts of parts.
