Towing

Anyone towed with the M5? I'm thinking about putting a tow bar on it but not sure how it will deal with towing.

I'm so confused, why would you tow something with your M5 and what are you planning on towing???

Should be no problem towing with it. I would limit the tongue weight as the suspension may not like too much extra weight, but as far as towing with it I doubt there would be any issues. What do you want to tow? I know people who tow small utilities trailers with their M2's to go to track days.

Funny but I was thinking whether it can tow also, not that I would. I’d rather tow it behind my Raptor.

I was going to tow a small boat and a quad - they don't weigh much.

You could probably tow a house.

Ha defo not lacking on power, I was more thinking how the gearbox will deal with picking the correct gear, and the handling.

How much isn't much (tongue, trailer, payload weight)?

Had no idea this was a thing lol, found this on google:

https://f10.m5post.com/forums/showth...400&page=2

Can't imagine ours are much different, someone on page two said 4,400 lbs max tow rating for an F10.

That would put your right around 660lbs tongue weight (conservative calculation to keep your vehicle safe using 15%). I read elsewhere that max payload is 975lbs, so the numbers make sense. Just FYI 4K lbs is ALOT, so whatever your planning to tow should be fine unless your trying to hook up a fifth wheel.

towing limitation would not be with the powertrain (not even the trans). it would entirely be in the suspension and the strength of the frame. I would be shocked if the F90 could really support 660 lbs of tongue weight. try putting that much weight in the trunk and then take a look at how much suspension travel you have before bottoming out. it wouldn't work.

Yup saw that from the Australian site too. The figures I cited are straight up generic towing calculations. The fact that they claim a 2000 kg tow rating (4,400 lbs) but then say only 90 kg (200 lbs) hitch weight, that's less than 5% tongue to trailer ratio. That's an extremely dangerous situation because the back end of the M5 will lift up and lead to trailer sway (9-15% is the normally accepted sweet spot ratio)

I'll go back to my original comment why would you do this with an M5 and what are you towing lol.

Mainly a boat but I also have a 30ft Caravan that's is 1800KG - I'll try and find out what the hitch weight is on it.

Did you ever wind up finding a solution? If so, what hitch did you use?

I am starting to look into trailer hitch options for the F90 M5. It is not for actual towing though and would instead be using it for hitch mounted thinks like cargo rack/box or a bike rack. The only option I have seen so far that seems to be known to work does not have a receiver though and only has the ball.

There is a video on you tube of a guy with an M5 pulling a huge boat, and racing a guy in a VD Golf. Quite funny.

^^^ that was funny…

You drive a $100K and don’t have a secondary car for towing or utility? I would not recommend you tow anything w and M5 just because it has the HP does not mean you should tow. Rent a car it would be much cheaper than having to swap out your rear suspension due to sagging.

I agree with this. I would just rent a vehicle if I need to tow something. If I need to regularly tow and the M5 is my only vehicle, I probably would have selected a different vehicle. It is just a risk I would not take. However if it is a leased car, I would probably tow if within the limits of the car if the M5 is my only car.

on that same thread....BMW does not have a factory tow hitch for the MX5...so you have your 100k SUV and you can't pull a trailer.....WTF?

Audi has no issue with the QRS8 pulling a trailer, it's a factory option.

I agree with the notion of renting a car for any real towing needs. On the other hand, a trailer hitch and receiver is a very practical option for expanding cargo carrying capabilities. Hitch mounted cargo platforms for a cargo box, ice chests, etc. or a bike rack.

But has anyone seen any hitch solution that has the square receiver instead of just a permanently attached ball for the F90 M5?
