Winter Tire and Wheel set-up - square
Since I have 20" wheels with iron rotors, will the 19x9.5 style 705M with 265/40 squared set-up work on my M5?
Any negative effects with a smaller size and I assume everything is just plug-in play? Thanks. |

It fits but handling goes way downhill. I have that setup and unexpectedly found myself fishtailing during some spirited driving that would have been fine with stock size summer tires. I will probably step up to 275/40/19 for the snows. I also put stock size all season PS AS4 on my stock wheels and bought wider and lighter wheels for summer tires.

I run that setup and have no problems.
You want a narrower tire in the snow, if you get snow where you are.

I ended up buying a set from a member here with the 265 and I agree you don't want a fat tire in the snow and I am in the midwest.

Yes, skinny tires cut through snow better. If you must drive in serious snow, it is best to compromise on handling and get skinny snows. Also best to get soft, heavily lugged ones that give jiggly handling and have a low speed rating.
If you do have another car you could drive or can wait until the plows have been out, you can use a stock or near stock size snow that is in the performance category with a higher speed rating. I am in NH and have snow wheels for all my cars, but disliked the 265/40/19 snows on the M5 so much last winter (my first with this car) that I bought a set of PS AS4 in stock size and put them on the stock 20” wheels to try this winter. If they don’t work well enough for my needs, I will put the 19” snow wheels on and think about changing the 265 snows to 275s. |

Agree but 265 vs 275 is not going to matter. I did a 20mm difference on my AMG and potholes did some damage because less rubber to the edge of rim living in Northeast

Every little bit can matter, but may not matter to everyone. With the 275, I would retain the same aspect ratio as in the 265. There would actually be more cushion. Snow performance would go down a little due to the added width but I accept that having run the 265s.

I bought a square set of wheels and PS5 winter tires pretty cheap from a pretty well known site. I will say i have had countless sets of winter tires and have tried everything. The PS5 is the best winter tire i've ever used, period the end. Performs as good or better than blizzaks and lasts twice as long.

PA5. It’s a great dry and wet cold weather tire but only mid pack in snow.
https://alltyretests.com/michelin-pi...5-test-review/ The Pirelli Winter Sotto was not in the test above. I have a version of them for my 21 Cayenne S but don’t think they are that great. I would have chosen the Michelin counterpart if it had been available at the time. SUV tires are different from car tires so maybe the ones for the M5 are good. I have Michelin PA5 for snows for the M5 and like them. Probably if I bought another set I would try the Vredstein. |
