Apple CarPlay

I didn't get this option for my 2018 M5 because it wasn't that great in my previous car. Now with Google and Waze integration, I'm considering it. However I'm hearing it's now a subscription? Is this true? How much is it to install CarPlay?

I think it is a software upgrade, ask the dealer, should cost around $300-400, or maybe they put you on the new subscription plan.

Or you can get the aftermarket activation via USB.
BimmerTech is selling them. If you are still interested, I can check if I can give you a deal.

I found out that as long as the car is enabled for CarPlay (all F90 M5s are) they can simply purchase the function via ConnectedDrive for $300.

I've enabled it following this:

I find CarPlay super buggy. I'm an Apple guy and was really looking forward to this integration, but it kind of falls flat :/

I have heard this before, but mine works 100 percent of the time 100 percent correctly. I'm surprised sometimes at how seamless it is. I wonder why there seems to be so much variability.

Every time I use Spotify through Apple car play my music will pause for 2-3 seconds and continue. 1 out of every 5 songs would do that. On the other hand I drive system with Spotify has been flawless.

i've had carplay since it came out in all my cars. two of them are aftermarket alpines (ilx-107 and ilx-007) and i dont find them buggy at all. fast forward with my f85 x5m with native carplay, other then the 2/3 screen i dont's see much bugs. yes it hangs once every few weeks but it's resolved by killing the app on my iphone. the positives like google maps, waze is worth it. also now, it's possible to get full screen carplay

FWIW I've been thrilled with CarPlay. The wireless automatic magic is great. I use it for Waze and controlling music and audiobooks pretty much anytime I am in the car. I haven't had any issues. I just wish I could program a specific CarPlay app to a custom button, but otherwise am super happy.

Does CarPlay connect via Bluetooth, WiFi or both? If so, has anyone noticed any loss in quality of music through iPhone and a wireless connection? I know there is loss with Bluetooth. But not sure if it is using other connection methods to minimize this. I keep a slave iPod connected by direct wire to minimize loss.

How it Works

Wireless CarPlay has three requirements, a Bluetooth connection, a Wi-Fi access point, and location data. Here's is a simplified breakdown of the entire process:

To initialize the connection the phone uses Bluetooth to send a signal to the head unit requesting to connect.
Once the Bluetooth connection is made the phone will request wireless credentials to the Wi-Fi access point.
Upon confirmation the head unit will send the wireless credentials to the iPhone, which will cause the phone to search and join the Wi-Fi access point.
After the Wi-Fi connection has been established, the Bluetooth signal will disconnect and all audio and video will be transferred over Wi-Fi.
And now you're set, you now can use CarPlay wirelessly.

CarPlay has come a long ways. Some people hate it and some love it. I wish I had wireless/touchscreen in all my cars 😝

I don't like that when in Carplay, you can't scroll through your playlist without having to do a lot of navigating back. On the iDrive it stays on the playlist list.

Question for the Lovers of CarPlay.

Which phone do you have? I suspect that the newer faster phones work better for this? I don't have CarPlay (I have had my finger on the install app button more than once on BMW ConnectedDrive website) but I have a 6s and its functionality has been neutered by Apples monkey business. It's slow. I have the BMW wireless charger case for it and that works great with the car's wireless charger. So I suspect if I try to use CarPlay I will be disappointed because of the phone's limitations.

i have ipx but i've had the ip6+ prior and carplay works well. what version of idrive firmware do you have? if you have N, O or P you can apply the fullscreen carplay patch. imho, fullscreen, touchscreen carplay is a great option to have next to the native idrive features. having google maps and waze is awesome.

Wanted to update this thread with my wide screen CarPlay patch. The guys at bimmer-tech did the remote coding in about 10min. It's looks much better now 😇

Very cool. Will this work for the M5 too? Also, can you still do the split screen if you want to and if so, what happens? Does it go back to the old width?

It should work with any Bmw CarPlay with idrive firmware nbtevo_o, n and p. I went with p as it the current idrive firmware. The widescreen patch only effects CarPlay related apps. The native idrive does not change.
