Just did this install with a Mirrortap. Took probably 15 minutes with only taking the big cover off. To get the Mirrortap into the harness I used a pair of curved hemostats (curved thin pliers would also work) to maneuver the pins into place, as I don't know how I would do that with my fingers without removing the other trim pieces. Putting the big cover back on was a little tricky but once it's lined up properly it snaps into place with a moderate amount of force.

I used this post, helped me out a ton. Nice idea using the curved pliers. My fingers are big, I had to remove the plug to access the pins.

Gotta be delicate removing the main cover. On my G12, I broke the clips which are attached to the windshield. Only way to fix it is with a new windshield. Horrible design.

I was at the dealership today for my break-in service and had the technician help me figure out how to open the mirror housing. He referred to his service manual for removal of the plastic cover, and also printed me a wire schematic to find the right wires to tap into.

1. The plastic mirror housing is in three pieces (see picture B). One large piece at the top, a narrow center "collar" section, and the bottom "cup" section. In picture A below the green lines are next to the seams where the three pieces come together.

2. First remove the large top section by squeezing in on both sides at the top front of the piece where I marked with the red circle. While pushing in on both sides, slide the section backwards towards the rear of the car.

3. Once you have the top section off you'll see the mirror wire harness (see picture C). You may be able to unplug the mirror harness without removing the two other pieces. If you need to remove the collar section you'll need a trim removal tool or something with a thin blade that will not scratch or mar the plastic housing. The technician used his trim tool to pry open the seam between the collar piece and the cup piece to separate them then he pulled out on both sides to disengage the collar section from the mirror. Note in picture B the tabs on either side of the collar section. I took picture C after I had installed the blendmount and wrapped the wire bundle and blendmount wires with electrical tape to hold the blendmount in place.

4. Unplug the mirror wire harness to gain access to the rear of the connector to insert the blendmount wire taps. You could also peel back the wire tape to create enough room to use a tap connector on the appropriate wires.

5. You want to use the red wire with the black stripe (pin 3) for the power and the brown wire (pin 10) for the ground (see picture D and the wire schematic below). The red/black wire is 12 volt power that will switch off 6 - 8 minutes after you turn the car off. It does not power down immediately.
OP, Super helpful! I tried using the small pin adaptors that came with my with my wiring kit... totally unsuccessful (BTW, I only removed the big cover at that point). I think the issue was that the pins were too small (these are what I used on my F80). I took all all 3 covers, got good access to the wiring harness, and bingo, everything worked perfect using the normal size pins.

P.S. Thanks to the person that recommended using a credit card to pry apart covers 2 and 3, came in handy for sure.

I have tried 20 plus times no luck. I get no power at all. is there a fuse somewhere? But then I think fuse is fine. When u unplug rear view garage lights don't show up but when I plug it in they are fine so assuming not a fuse issue.

Great writeup

Did this yesterday. Just took top collar off and used a long nose to jam them in. Note you need to push in so no metal is showing. Thanks much!

I've got a Radenso Pro M I would like to hardwire, but I was thinking I would do a fusetap. Are there fuse panels in the side of the dash?

Thanks for the DIY post. Answers most questions I had. Now I’ll wait until warms up a bit (Iowa Winter) in the garage before I give it a go. Will be wiring in a V1 Gen 2.

So Ive been using the mirror tap for over a year now and all of a sudden it just stopped working for me. I got a new cable and it still doesnt work.

the radar works if I plug it into the Cigarette adaptor so i know the issue is not the radar. the garage buttons also works so im not sure what else to do to troubleshoot.

Anyone have this issue ?

thanks

I have the same issue. Mine never worked to begin with. I even stripped wires to make sure but didn't work still.

No issues after close to 3 years.

Is anything different about this procedure with a 2021 M5, especially with Driving Assistant Professional?

I ask because I have had zero luck in getting the larger cover off, following the instructions here, watching some videos on YouTube, etc. I've applied a pretty significant amount of force and it just isn't budging, and I really don't want to break anything (especially the clips that someone mentioned are built into the windshield itself).

Thanks for the instructions and all the data points here. I was able to get this done with my R7 and blendmount wires.

The first cover is a effing B. I struggled but finally got it off and chipped one of the clips in the process, but thankfully the cover still went back on and stayed with no movement or vibrations when driving.

My wiring was also different than OP but figured that out after the R7 didn’t power on and had an autowiper error. All good now. Thanks for providing the wiring documents.

I have mine mounted right under the dot matrix and have no issues with the radar working.

I did this in my 2018 and it worked out fine. But in my 2022 LCI, that top cover just does not want to budge. So I decided to wire to the fuse box in the passenger side foot well. Maybe a little more effort, but I really didn't want to break that cover. There is another thread about the fuse method:

Just did this with a V1G2 in my '21 M5C and worked perfectly with mirror tap. I was able to remove just the large plastic housing per the OP and used needle nose pliers to tap into the connector. Was a bit awkward to get the taps aligned and probably easier removing all the trim pieces, but was able to do the install in ~25 min total.

I’ve had detectors hard wired in vehicles for the past decade. This post made the F90 install so easy and I didn’t have to spend all night trying to get it to work! Thanks a million!

Hey brother, was the wires you tapped into the same as the ones mentioned on this write up? I am going to do the installation sometime this week and I wasn't sure if the wires and color code changed with the LCI.

I'm not the OP, but I did my LCI and it was the same.

Used AGS's excellent write up for both pre-LCI and LCI numerous times. It's the same for both!

AGS thanks for the write up, it really made it easy installing the mirror tap. For removing the trim around the mirror, this video helped. https://youtu.be/jTQFVoRIkuE

Yeah, I used that too. Was still a pain in the arse getting the first piece off.
