when is my oil service due?

So maybe I am overthinking this but is it due in another 7,003 or when my odo is at 7,003 because currently it is at 7,400 and there’s been no notification?

Hi armoredsaint,

Going off what my own Mechanic has advised plus lurking on other fourms. From their words they reccomend atleast every 10k km on the higher end, my mechanic has advised every 6-7k km. It all depends on how much oil you're burning for every 700 miles/1000km, should be around the 1 liter mark. Since I'm not going via dealership as well, I would just check the last odemeter reading when the last change was done

If i'm misinformed feel free to let me know, still learning about my car and would love to know If my info above is incorrect.

That means it is due in 7003 miles from now. It is not the odometer reading that is it due at. That number will come down based on the computer. It also moves in large chunks...ie if you go drive 100 miles it may or may not drop to "6900".

I just thought it was odd to say 7003 in such small increments and I have put on 300 miles since and still the same

I chalk that up to being a German car. Overly precise and complex sometimes, other times "you don't have a need to know so we won't tell you".

I just had my 1st regular oil change today at 7500mi with it saying 500 left. After reset the new initial value is now 8000. So it looks like it defaults the next interval to whatever the last one ended up at. The first interval started at 10k but worked its way down. Since I think the 5k oil change lore is unwarranted I sent this oil in to Blackstone as well. It looks like I'll be a 7k-7.5k interval going forward.

My wife's X5 (B58) defaulted to 12k after 10k for the last interval.

My understanding is the service is one year or the specified mileage whichever is sooner. The specified mileage starts with a default but condition based service alters that, in most cases by reducing the mileage interval. Not sure what factors go into that computation since I do not think there is any Blackstone like chemical analysis going on. Rather, I suspect the ECU records factors like how often the engine reaches operating temperature, the engine rpm and throttle position, etc. that can differentiate between hard city driving, easy highway driving, and track or other hard use.

The oil life is based on milage, warm up cycles, engine loads, etc. I was saying that I sent my oil to Blackstone for analysis. I have always gone by the car's oil life monitor because at least with GM they were conservative. There is a lot of talk on this and the F10 forum about BMW saving money by changing the intervals. Many think 10k is too long and do 5k. I feel good following the car since it looks like it will average out in between the two values.

FWIW both of my GM LSx engines would request changes around 7-8k miles, so to me that seems like the right spot for high performance engines.

I figured the X5's interval went up because it was mostly used on long drives. Now my wife makes 2 short trips almost every day where the car does not warm up. I expect the 12k to come down quite a bit because of that.

I've had my M5 a year now and am now a little over 5k miles. It's notified me it wants an oil change, but by miles I still have a ways to go. Am I going to create an issue with the warranty if I just wait until the miles are done, or do I really need to get one done since it's been a year? I honestly just hate visiting the dealer. I hate them so much I bought this one from a dealer in NJ and picked it up in SC. Service department is pretty decent, but still...

If it’s been a year go get it done, regardless of the mileage.

As for warranty, if something blows up and you can’t show that you followed the recommended service intervals then yes they can deny your claim.

Whenever time “beats” miles, always go with time. Agree with carseatsm5; it’s definitely time for an oil change.

The car is telling you it’s time for the oil chnage based on your specific car’s use, not some time table (i.e., every 12 months).

How much will normally cost to change the oil for F90 in an independent shop instead of the dealer's service department?
