Angry Need advice for an aircon issue - bad evaporator

I have a 2018 F90 M5. A few weeks ago, the air conditioning went warm. I went to the local auto parts store, and got a can of R1234yf and filled up the sealed system, and it started blowing cold again, for about 1 week. During that time, when I got in the car to start it up after it had been off for a while, I could smell the scent of ?refrigerant or compressor oil? in the passenger compartment. Subsequently, I went to the dealer, who is now in the process of diagnosing the leak. They filled it up with indicator and more refrigerant. Sadly, I am pretty sure that they are going to find and evaporator coil leak.

Questions for the community:
1) Has anyone dealt with this before? I understand it is a horribly expensive and invasive repair requiring the entire dashboard to be removed.
2) While I am not sure, it seems that people are complaining about the F90/G30s with V8s tending to have a problem with this. Is this true? An evaporator going out at 5 years seems very suspect.
3) What are people's experiences with getting BMW to do a goodwill repair. I have bought multiple cars from this dealership, and hopefully they will step up for me. Does anyone have any advice to help me to get BMW to cover this, especially if this is a common failure with this vehicle.

Thanks

Sorry to hear... but my 2019 comp is just in getting the Evaporator replaced! My butt hurts so much that I can't feel my heavily lightened wallet!

I am a DIY guy, but this was a little beyond me and living in Texas, no aircon is not an option!

Be prepared!

I got lucky, mine was replaced during warranty. Yea, they took the whole dash apart.

I am in Texas. As an update, I got it fixed at the dealership (as we have no convenient indy shops that can handle this). Dealer got BMW to pay for the part, but I still had to pay nearly $4000 in "diagnosis", followed by "fixed the wrong thing" followed by "fixed the correct thing" dealership nonsense. (I believe we have one of the most predatory dealerships here in town, and I will fix everything I can myself, but I was not equipped to do this job.)

I have a 2019 and went thru this a few months ago. I fortunately bought the extended warranty and it was covered. If you’re going keep your car a while, the warranty pays for itself.

Back on the road with cool aircon after having the evaporator replaced. Pic of gutted interior!
