F90 Pre Lci Steering Retrofit

Hi Gents,

Is it possible to retrofit LCI steering wheel to pre-lci? I like the functionality of skip song button on tap rather than scroll.

Doubtful, for one the LCI comes with the eye sensor mounted at top of instrument cluster. There are LEDs on the LCI on the steering wheel to notify if you’re not keeping hands on wheel. Also, cruise control buttons are different.

I’m so confused. On pre-LCI, the “next song” option is a button.

I was referring to buttons like the one on LCI on right side of steering wheel

I have those same buttons, don't think it's an LCI specific option. Might be part of executive package?

That's pre-lci steering on cars without live cockpit pro.

Maybe. 2020 pre-lci has the same wheel as LCI. slightly different cruise control lay out mind you but same function. you would need to buy trim, buttons, and I bet it would fit your frame. But can't guarantee that but I am pretty confident it's the same behind the trim. Only thing really different is the button layout and they just screw in to the trim piece and plug in. Plug is the same as all modern bmw steering wheel plugs.

FYI that picture is of an M8. Again same steering wheel as '20 F90 and LCI without adaptive cruise.

So I would target wheel trim from a 2020 if you have adaptive cruise.

2020 M5 wheel doesn’t have the LEDs… can’t see how you could retrofit this

Other option would be 2021 X3 M40i steering. They do not have LED.

I think I understand now. I have a 2020 and didn't realize the 2018/2019 steering wheels have different buttons.

Yes i was simply looking to upgrade so i can have skip song buttons on steering rather than rotation when on right side and then push it down.

You should be able to do this by just getting new buttons and new trim for the face of the wheel. The rest of the wheel is the same from what I saw when I swapped to an mperformance wheel.

I found the right set of buttons. Going to order trim and see how it turns out.

I know it's not the same at all as having dedicated buttons on the steering wheel but fo the LCI no longer have the hand motion sensors to turn up the volume and wildcard motion you can setup as "skip"? It was prob my 2018s coolest party trick that I actually used on a regular bases. My wife would sometimes get in her car (which didn't have it) and move her hands around forgetting which car she was in lol

Can you post a before and after photo. Interesting to see the difference. Always learn something new from fellow members here.

I have a 2020 X3 M40i with idrive 7. I ran into a whole debacle early on where I ordered the carbon steering wheel trim piece and it only worked for I drive 6 cars (with the older style button setup and no next track button). I thought that's just how the trim is and so I ordered iDrive 6 buttons to match. A few short months later, they released an updated trim for iDrive 7 cars…. So I guess it was an error on BMWs part or I just ordered it to soon. I ordered the new trim, went back to my original wheel buttons setup and sold my old iDrive 6 trim and old buttons.

So to answer your question, it will in fact work. lol
So long as you get the correct button options as your current vehicle

I've done this. You just need the right buttons and the new trim piece to accomodate them. The wheel was updated along with the new iDrive BEFORE the LCI came out (which includes the LEDs on the wheel that some have mentioned).

I had the new trim piece painted in black at the same time before I fitted it altogether.

Note that I bought a set of X3 buttons first and they didn't work. Car threw an error every time I pressed the cruise button (even though they looked the same). Have a look on RealOEM to find the correct part number for your car.

Deed is done. Finally after months of research and hunting for the right parts, here it is.

Everything works how it should and now you can skip a song with a click of a button.
