Emergency system malfunction
Got this message on my dash "Emergency system malfunction" took it to my service advisor and the backup battery which is located in the headliner where the system "SOS" is. He told me about 17,000 BMW vehicles are affected therefore it's 2-3 months wait. The only bad thing is that the message will not go away on my dash which is annoying.
I have a 2018 FE M5. Anybody else had this issue?

I have it on mine. Took it in and SA confirmed the same issue with the battery. It's not just F90s, but a BMW wide issue. My SA ordered a new battery and I'm dropping of my car tomorrow afternoon to repair. It took about 1 month for the dealer to receive the battery.

It is simply asinine to put that battery in the headliner unless there is some quick hatch to open to change it. But I read somewhere that it's a "Take the Headliner out" job. If true that is one dumb design. Surely nothing can go wrong taking the headliner out......rattle.....rattle.....rattle....don't ask me how I know....rattle....rattle...rattle.....
I had a similar issue with the On-star module in my '03 RS6. The charging system of that module was faulty and it simply did not charge the 'backup battery.' The fault would show as a Red light on the On Star Button instead of the green all-systems-go-light. The red light was not as distracting when you drive at night, so it kind of was a good thing. Audi never fixed that issue, they just ignored it as On-star was going from Analog Cell phone to Digital and the system would be obsolete anyway. Mike

Apparently the battery is in the fin looking transponder on the roof, but to get access to it you have to go through the interior of the car. I'm surprised your dealer is saying 2-3 months. Did they check other parts inventory at other BMW dealers nearby? I'd lob a call into BMW NA as 2-3 months seems excessive.

Just wanted to write a quick update. Parts came in sooner than they thought and was installed successfully. They don't take down the headliner, only the plastic where the SOS button is.

Took mine in for service 2 weeks ago for an oil change, I had been having this same "malfunction" for a few months intermittently. They swapped out the battery, all good now.

Just started getting this message intermittently as well. Car has about 3300 miles.
I started happening a few weeks after installing racechip and I was wondering if it was due to that. From this forum it looks like a separate issue. |

1. Emergency System Malfunction 2. Forward Camera Malfunction 3. Comfort Access (Keyless Entry) Not Working (but I can use the buttons on the key fob to lock/unlock the car) I am starting to get a bad feeling about this. I am waiting on a battery for No. 1. Anybody else have number 2 and 3? Are they somehow related to each other? Thanks. |

I have had a couple of the Emergency Call System Malfunction notices, and my comfort access is crapping out. I figured it was a key fob battery going bad.

currently I am getting a daily msg, saying your FOB has a low battery,
Does not make sense, since I just changed it with my wife's battery and she has only driven my car 4 times, so her battery must be like 90 %. Any ideas ? |

Those batteries are going to be a PITA when these cars are 5 or 6 years old. Mike

The battery associated with this issue is not the TCU backup battery. It's the power source to keep the RS/eCall system available in the event the main battery disconnect is triggered. |
