The costs associated with decontenting vehicles are more about changes in the production line.

Decontenting in general creates a sense of exclusivity/superiority as we all know. Porsche is a master of this and really kicked it off in the US with the RS America back in the 80's. From what I remember that car was less than 50 lbs lighter than a standard 911.

On an M5cs, it would be relatively easy to drop a lot of weight. Simple carbon buckets, sunroof delete, proximity censor delete (keyless entry/go), power trunk, etc. The problem is around how integrated those systems are into the vehicle. My guess is quite a bit so removing many of those systems might be much more difficult than it looks on the surface.

The other question is how large the real market is for a vehicle like an M5cs. Typical M5 buyers are more about having the fastest sled on the hill, not hard core track people that would notice the very slight weight decline.
+ 1. This about changing up a normal production line run for a special limited edition car. It cost money to do so. The added CS specific parts and wheels are not cheap either plus they still have to be installed. This is an expense to BMW. You also have to pay M engineers and drivers to test and download new calibrations on the M differential, suspension, steering, etc. This all cost money. I'm just saying....The extra cost to step up to a CS is not the HUUUGGGE rip-off some people claim.

Fully agree. I drove mine back to back with my friends CS and found that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The CS is a great car.

Bring on a rawer, faster, more energetic M5 CS please...

With regards to the BMW models.. when it comes time for an LCI.. There will simply be an LCI for all three... ( or four if a CSL is in the cards)... models in the lineup .
I could see that if they were actually releasing all models, but they haven't been. Maybe they start with the G80, but with the F90 it would be a really poorly timed release.

Keeping with your train of thought though, I would honestly like to see the M5 CS follow the same trail as the Turbo or Turbo S, an even more capable version of an already incredible car that gains better aero/visuals along with more power without sacrificing any of the luxuries of the pure model.
Let's leave the stripping of comforts and accessories for the M3, which as was stated in another post, is a car that is muchly more likely to be purchased for track use as opposed to the M5 which is a luxury rocket tank. I'll pay more for that.

I'm not following. Wasn't production of the F80 platform discontinued in October of 2018?

Huh?

F80 had an LCI in 2016 when the F30 got its LCI. Then another LCI (e.g. new ICON LED headlights) in 2017 when the F32 got its LCI. Somewhere between those two facelifts, BMW put out the M4 GTS.

Yes, realized that after my post and edited. Seems you replied before then.

I was more confused as to why they are testing a F80 CS when it's out of production?

He was just pointing out that they did the same with the F80 M3 that's all. That old photo should answer guys questions as to why they don't see the F90 CS with LCI.

I emailed my dealership a few months back when these were just rumors and am #1 on the list for the M5 CS. Honestly, I just hope it doesn't come too soon as I still have a little over 2 years left on my M3 CS lease.

From the pictures the M5 and CS badges have different color and font. It looks like he added the M3 CS part to his 5 series.

The problem with M5 is having such an underrated sculpture. It's a nice 5 series but not a head turner even in its most exclusive models and colors. One expects more exclusivity from a car which has a performance of a hyper car.

i really wasnt paying attention so I could be wrong..
There was no 2014 "model year".

The concept of "model year" is mostly a North American one, and all M3 produced in 2014 and sold in North America were sold as 2015 model year.

I think they do that to sell the remainder of stock before the LCI is released. Then the LCI CS will be the last year of the LCI F90. Hopefully I'm wrong but from the M3/M4 CS methodology it seems that way.

In my opinion it depends on the direction. I don't really see the need to take this car in a stripped down, track focused direction, but if they kept the luxury/comfort level the same while adding the better aero bits, and increasing power then I would be all in. I would say focus it more for the guy who wants the luxury rocket during the week but is going to make "canyon runs" on the weekend vs. go to the track.

The M3/M4 CS getting more stripped down and track focused definitely makes sense.

I'd be interested in the market research on this, but I would have to think that the M3/M4 buyer is buying that car specifically because they want the dual purpose car to take to the track. The M5 buyer likely has something else they prefer as their track car, but wants the luxury/supercar experience in something more practical for a daily.
