The update today from the dealership is that BMW is sending a factory engineer to inspect my oil pump. They also said that there are no oil pumps in stock even in Germany and my car is going to be there a while longer.

Crazy because I just bought the car and had it shipped from Texas to CA. Drove it only one day before it went to the dealer. Don’t even know what M5 ownership is like yet but hopefully will see better days haha!

Thanks for the feedback.

2018 M5 here, mine does that same sound but not as loud. Seems to be louder when I start the car closer to 0 degrees but even then not as loud as that

Mine is louder on cooler mornings for sure, kinda spoils the cold start roar!

Thanks for updates, hopefully get this sorted asap

Talked to the advisory yesterday and he told me they are now waiting on oil pump and it’s on back order for 3 weeks.

I wonder if they are just assuming and will find it still makes the same noise after the change. Either that or there are a hell of a lot of fuel pumps that need to be changed!!

Never heard that sound once when starting my car and I’m in freezing Canada. Definitely not normal.

Mine does this as well.

Anyone notice difference after 1200 mile oil change ? Or any change at all in US?

Sorry I haven't reported back but believe it or now just picked up my M5 back from the shop on Friday ( December 6)

They swapped out the oil pump and it fixed the issue.

The car was at the shop from October 23 till December 6...

Thanks for the update and did they say what was the issue in terms of why it was doing this or would not changing the fuel pump result in more damage to other components etc. Thats a lot of cars that need a new fuel pump!!

ah yes the ticking noise another floor with the new M5 had mine in to the stealers for 6 weeks trying to find that issue, still sounds the same until it warms up slightly then it goes away, i have heard that whine before on initial start up, just never put it down to the Oil pump.

Might enquire about this
