Buzzing/whirring type of sound on start-up

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hey guys, whenever I turn my car on after it sits for some time (cold start in the morning, or parked somewhere for a hour or few hours), there is this buzzing type of sound that goes only goes on for 2-3 seconds as the engine is firing up.

It doesn't necessarily bother me nor do I think its affecting anything but I just wanted to see if it was just a normal characteristic of the car and/or if anyone else also experiences this?

I would be more than happy to get a video clip of the sound the next time I drive the car.

There is a unique buzzing/humming sound as I enter the car. Sounds like the car is waking up ala transformer style. Is this what you are referring to?

The sound you hear when you first unlock or open the door is the fuel pump pressurizing the fuel system.
The sound you hear immediately after starting the engine that lasts for a few seconds is a pump that has something to do with emissions.
Both are common among many modern BMW's. My M3 and my X5 also make both of those noises.

Bingo. Figured it was normal -- at least with this car. My X7 doesn't seem to do it (so far). Thanks for the input!

I’ve never noticed the sound. The next time I crank it up (later today, I think) I’ll listen for it and report back. Now I’m curious...hmmmm

For anyone curious, this thread was also just made. This is the same exact sound FWIW. Mine isn't as loud but it's there.
