CCBs are prone to squeal, that's why Quickburn went for the steel instead of the CCBs.
I thought that was the case and was hesitant about getting ceramic brakes. I'm so glad I did! The CCB on my F90 are silent and the pedal modulation feels perfect with no fade or dust. My previous X5M was a great car but the squeal was unbearable. That was one of the main reasons why I moved over to the M5.
If steel brakes squeak, what's the cost of getting CCB replacements? Is that option really bad from a cost standpoint?

I have F10 M5 on CCB, X5M on steel, and M6 (no longer with me) on steel and none of them squeal, that's why I said it seems to be a hit or miss problem, which is okay if it's fixable, I think the biggest problem people have is once you have squeal, it's almost impossible to get rid of unless you change the entire brake set.

Agree with the hit or miss. My X5M has 28,000 miles and is quiet for 2 days after a wash, then squeal city. My F90 has 2,xxx miles and zero squeal. Both steels. Go figure.

burnishing the brakes

i took my car in last week as i could not handle the noise at every stop sign. Even though they told me that BMW said "It's normal", i was not
going to be happy driving this car sounding like a school bus.

The service drive did a procedure called burnishing the brakes and
it seems to have fixed the problem 95%. They heat up the brakes and then let them cool is what they told me. I think i heard a small squeak
at one point since then but nothing like i was dealing with.
Ask your dealer about this procedure.

Now i'm a happy M5 driver again. If the sound comes back
i'm going to have them do it again. When you drive a 100k+ car
you shouldn't feel bad about being aggressive with the dealer and
getting the satisfaction that you want.

Thanks for all the comments on the post. Great to know I'm not alone. So embarrassing to roll up to a stop sign and sound like a school bus. Been trying all sorts of ways to engine brake so I don't have to touch the pedal. That's not right at any price range, even worse at $120k+.

I'm at a temporary duty assignment, but when I return home next month, I will take it in for the burnishing. Between now and then, I guess I roll the windows up and turn up the volume on the B&W.

First disappointment in an otherwise amazing vehicle.

I burnished my brakes like the instructions that onfire linked to. It worked for a couple weeks and then it came back. It always comes back a few days after washing the car.

Long story short it is an astronomical cost, especially since the rotors are supposed to last 100k miles with 3-4 pad changes.

Not entirely sure how much it costs for a BMW but for some sort of perspective the ceramic brake kit for the Audi C7 platform cost about $20k (aftermarket) just for parts. Pretty sure you could be looking at additional costs if you have 19 inch rims too.

My F10 M5 Comp. has squealed since day one. I changed the brake pads and they still squeal. Its a feature not a bug.

After sounding like a city bus for several weeks, my car sat in the parking garage for 5 days while I went home for a bit. I drove it yesterday and it was completely quiet. No idea why just sitting for a few days would change anything. I'm fully expecting the squeal to return, but this is strange.

I could be due to weather. I find my M5 squeal a lot more in hot temperature.

Mine also seems to be hit or miss, and maybe weather is biggest factor? Because sometimes it squeals when clean, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it squeals when dirty, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it squeals after hard driving, sometimes it doesn't.

Regardless, I f***ing love this thing and feel a bit grateful every time I get into it, even when it squeals. The only other car I still enjoyed this much after 3 months of ownership was my Sierra Denali.

Brakes were squeaking like crazy on my X5M.

I have the carbon ceramic brakes on the M5 , they were quiet at the beginning.

I went for a road trip in the south of France and in Switzerland , with a lot of mountain drive.

The brakes are squeaking like a school bus ...
But at least , they do brake well.

I have my F90 for about 7k miles and the squeaking on the brakes is for sure getting annoying and I agree with one member when you pull up to somewhere with a 120k+ car it's deff a little embarrassing for the brakes to sound that way.... I've had CCB on my f10 and were nothing like this.
