Help make me feel better...please!

Classic M1 button blunder. Thought I programmed the transmission in M1 to D3, was in S3 instead. 500 miles into break-in period. End of a long drive, sitting at a light, decide to stretch her legs a bit, hit the M1 button, give her some gas, next thing I know, redline. As soon as it flashed I let off. I was there a split second. I’m so mad at myself.

You are completely fine. The engine will fuel cutoff to protect itself. Enjoy the car.

Your motor may explode now and leave oil all over your driveway.

Just kidding. I did Eurodelivery and drove it like it was stolen from mile 1. Have done the same with last 4 M5's. Never an issue. I promise, you'll be fine.

I concur with Poleposition drive the car like it was meant to be driven and don't stress. I slowly build revs/throttle from new to about 250 miles, but after that it is game on as far as I am concerned. Through 15+ BMW's the only one that has ever had a problem was an X5 diesel that had an infant rod failure within 4K miles from new. That was the one car I didn't drive hard!

Thanks all - I really appreciate you helping me through this! I’m still so mad at myself. When I set the M buttons up, I was sure I programmed it to be automatic (specifically to prevent what happened!). Lesson learned - I need to double check all the settings next time. Thanks again all of you - I feel a lot better about things now.

I did the EU delivery myself and my break-in period was 3 km. (the car had 3 km when I took delivery)

Had it at Vmax (263 kmph - as indicated) before the limiter kicked in.

Yeah don't lose sleep over this. Cars are engineered to not explode at redline before the break-in period. There are a lot of BMW engineers who do not follow this rule and drive it like they stole it right out of the gates.

It's gonna be a lemon now... Total loss...

It's fine, it happens, safety features are in place to prevent catastrophic failure...

I did ED and there was no way I was following their guidelines while on the Autobahn. As Long as the engine is warm, let er rip.

My brain was saying watch the RPM and speed but my heart did something else at foot everytime I stepped into that car. The only common sense I used was that yellow thingy to land at its right spot!

We've all done it! First time I tried launch control, I was unaware of the 6 miles have to be driven first rule. So I launched and it went to redline in a faction of a sec, flashing, etc. No worries

I've done this in LC 3-4 times. The car has 3500 and it's running strong with no issues.

Literally LOL!

I think the flashing is particularly hard to handle - especially for a rule follower like me. It's like the car is yelling "shame on you!!!"

It definitely was alarming, which is really it's purpose!

Did this a few times early on. I am at 22k miles now and no detectable oil burning.
