Searching for a 2018-2020 F90 M5
This has probably been asked before, but here goes:
1) Is it worth getting the comp? 2) Anything to look out for? For example, E60 M5s were plagued with the rod bearing issue; F80 M3s had the crank hub failures. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Welcome.
1. Definitely was worth it (to me) to get the Comp. YMMV. For some it is not worth it. They would rather take the difference and plug it into their own mods. Me, I know that I am not a “modder”, by and large, and I really like the aesthetic differences, and that’s really where it’s at, and looks are subjective. I mean sure, there is what, a 17HP upgrade there too, but at the end of the day, you are not going to really notice that. The pre-LCI (pre-‘21 models, US) Comps were known to ride a bit rough, but the LCI’s seem to be much better in this regard, by all accounts I’ve read. I mean, I love mine, so… Lots of peeps on here who have had both Comp and Non-Comp, pre-LCI and LCI, probably, so I’m sure you’ll appreciate their experiences. 2. I had this same question awhile back, and it seems that, no, there is really no known “Achilles heel” on this platform. Some here who have tracked theirs said that it can overheat somewhat easily on a track, but I cannot confirm that. Also, earlier on in the model’s lifespan, I was reading about its oil pan not being protected very well, and having rocks and road debris puncture it, but I have not heard anything about this lately. One interesting thing I’ve been seeing on here lately is that dealers really seem to be holding onto their inventory a lot more, driving prices up to MSRP, and with some dealers apparently asking a premium. So if you can wait that out, might get a better deal. Best of luck! Last edited by ///WeissBisBlau; 10-21-2021 at 09:17 PM.. |

Yes it is. The Comp is the best M5 that doesn't do without proper rear back seats and bowers and Wilkins (perhaps no B&W for the moment)
I did not even consider leaving the Competition box unchecked when I ordered mine. |

Depends on what you want. I went with a MY21 Non Comp. I moved up from a F80 ZCP and at my age (41) it was starting to beat me up as a daily driver. Just to violent. The M5 is so much smoother and comfortable of a drive. Like said above, I can easily do a BM3 tune and add more power without the rigged suspension.
I recommend spending some time driving both and then you can make a good decision. |

Comp depends on what you want. If you aren't going to mod (power and suspension), then you should absolutely get the comp - there are stripes on the seat belts 😜. If you do plan on modding probably, comp is not worth it - I would opt for CCBs instead. My $.02.

Exactly. Don't take other people's advice as gospels. Comfort and suspension feel is very subjective and someone who's used to driving track cars would think M5C at sport plus setting rides like butter, but someone who come from a 530 base suspension would think it's way too harsh. Only you can decide what's best for you after thorough test drives. I opted for a 19 M5 base for my wife after she told me she liked her last M550i's comfort, and she's very happy with the M5.
