Best way of packing out the trunk of a M5 Comp

Hi guys,

About to switch from an RS6 to the M5 Comp. Looks like an absolutely epic car. The only concern I've got is that we regularly fill the whole trunk of the RS6 up on family trips and the M5 one looks strangely shaped. We typically take three or four suitcases, so I'm specifically trying to do the same thing, rather than a bunch of soft carrier bags.

Has anyone worked out the perfect dimensions of suitcases to fill the M5? Perhaps four specific sized medium ones or something similar.

Thanks!

Which year RS6? I had ‘03. Trunk in M5 is larger. But my RS6 had at least a blow up spare. This car has NOTHING. LOL. Can of fix a flat. So for travel in this it’s going to require killing half the space with a spare (winter tire) and maybe Thule box on the roof.

Garage List
I think the last time I needed a spare tire was maybe 1999? And that was because my car at the time had junk OEM rims (which led to a class action lawsuit and settlement). Not sure why a full size spare tire in the trunk is requisite for travel... Between fix a flat and AAA...

It's a '13 RS6 - a super early one of the latest gen. And like the others said, I haven't had a spare in decades, it's always just a can of foam these days. Think even my E60 had that back in 2004.

Anyone with ideas on suitcase dimensions?

You will get a flat this week. The "8 Ball" tells me.

LOL. I keep a tire plug kit in the car. The flats I have had (one on RS6 and one on our Sienna) I was able to FIY with a plug. My RS6 flat happened the day I changed from winters to summers. The summers had about 10 miles on them (took them off the day I got the car since I had my snows from Tirerack before I had the RS6). I got a nail at my son's friend's house (dirt driveway, Malone NY, who has pavement?) I plugged it and just drove it until it was bald like the other four. LOL. Sienna had Run Flats but had a leak, I plugged the bitch and it was fine. I also plugged my Tractor tire! LOL. Plugs are cool.

But I never chanced our 10 hour drive to the my parents or my wife's parents without a real spare. I never actually used the blow up spare and to this day am waiting for an explaining from the Fatherland on why the spot the spare goes in the RS6 had pins blocking the area where a full sized spare WOULD fit. Never had the guts to cut those things off, I had hoped to get info from Audi on this.

Get a spare. You'll be happy on that day when it happens.

Mike

I just got a flat this morning! Big bolt right into the shallow part of the tread. First time in - well, ever. Fortunately, the compressor allowed me to get to the tire shop for a patch.

As far as the original question in the post, I've done a few road trips and put 2 Tumi Extended Trip suitcases in the trunk. It's their biggest suitcase and I still have plenty of room on top of them for my traveling bar (always a must on a road trip) and a couple duffle bags.

Google searching shows the F90 M5 as having 18.7 cu-ft of trunk space. Is that correct? Because that's a prodigious amount of trunk space given the gold standard family sedans like the Honda Accord tops out at 2 cu-ft smaller. And by further comparison, the latest generation Audi A8 has only 12.5 cu-ft and the Panamera Sport Turismo "wagon" has only 18.3 cu-ft.

Well, I emotionally u-turned from open-mouthed, drooling jealousy to heartfelt sympathy and a jarring sense of hopelessness in the space of 2 seconds and one tiny little lowercase "i".

No no. I mis-read Sienna briefly as Senna--which is quite different.

I’m thinking of the exact Same move! I have a 2016 RS6, and thinking of jumping into an M5.
My previous car was an S4 Avant, so I’m a little “nervous” moving into a saloon(sedan)
Why did you yourself decide to make the jump?

During our European delivery road-trip we had a 26" hard-sided suitcase, a 30" soft-sided suitcase, a 22" soft-side rollaboard, a couple of relatively bulky laptop backpacks, and other random junk in the trunk with no problem.

It's a relatively generous space, but it's not very tall - it feels more awkward to fill than the E39 trunk.

We fit a large 34" suit case and two medium suit cases in the trunk with various soft bags on our eurodeliery with no problem.

It's been six years now since I got it, and the chassis is starting to feel old. It tramlines and understeers, and while it was a humongous step forward compared to my old E60 M5, it now feels a bit out of date. Although it looks absolutely epic. Visually it hasn't aged at all. I have daytona grey pearl on silver 21s and it's just great, better than the new M5. But to drive, it's now last generation. Even with a 730bhp MTM tune which I put on straight away, it's still slower in a straight line than the new M5, let alone around a track.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Sounds like one large suitcase and two medium ones is the way to go. The RS6 fits three giant ones, but I guess that'll need to be sacrificed.
