Unable to refuel

A couple of month ago, I took a trip to Las Vegas in the M5. I stop around mid way to refuel at Holbrook, AZ at the Maverik gas station off I40. Drove up to pump and started to pump gas, soon as I press pump trigger, it kick back like if the tank was full. I tried several times and same result. Could not get gas to tank. I then cancelled transaction and started over, same result. I then changed to a different pump thinking the first one may be defective. Same result, soon as I press trigger to fuel, it popped right back. IÂ’m thinking that I am screwed, it must be my car because there were many other cars getting fuel with no problem.
I had about 80 miles left in tank and no dealership around for hundred of miles. I started thinking that I can’t be the only person ever to have this problem. Took out my phone and googled my situation and sure enough found some answers. Some say that certain gas stations fill fuel much faster than other stations especially in an area of high traffic to speed up fueling. That the fume build up during fueling is too high, triggering the fuel pump to think the tank is full.
I drove to another gas station with my finger crossed to try to refuel. I had absolutely no problem this time, I never had any problem refueling anywhere elseÂ…. Is this problem a BMW car defect or normal. Anyone else experience this problem? If so, what is the fix beside going to a different gas station.

I am driving to Las Vegas in about ten days, I guess I will skip that gas station this time….and always leave enough gas to get another gas station.

I have owned several M5's and have never had that issue in California.

you have to put the nozzle in just the right amount, it can be touchy....any back pressure and it thinks the filler is full. Work around. Fill a five gallon gas can and then pour into the M5.

Ride around with a five gallon gas can to fill up at a gas station then transfer that to car? I am guessing this is a joke

No, he was trying to find a way to drive the the DEALERSHIP but did not have enough gas in the car to get there. My solution was logical and would have been successful. Not a permanent fix. Clearly there is something amiss with his tank filling nozzle. Bent? foreign body in it or something that is not allowing proper venting of gas fumes and thus the gas pumps sensor is stopping the flow of gasoline to the tank.

Mike,

I have a F31 that does this at some gas pumps, but not all. Nothing is really wrong with it, it's just old and some pumps put too much pressure and gush into the fuel pipe, feeding back impulses to the pump that make it think it's full.

Track cars commonly have this problem. Many a guy has come up with your solution. Nothing wrong with it. There are plenty of people who carry around extra fuel, or a jerry can in case of emergency. Your explanation is self explanatory.

I thought it was I suggested that I carry a 5 gallon gas can all the time…lol
Luckily, the other gas station had no problem
I’ll have dealer take a look during next service visit. Have not had that problem again. Heading to Vegas next weekend , just skip that station.

What a minute, you don't keep a 5 gallon gas can in the trunk of all your cars with a patch/plug kit, water supply, flare gun, AR15 and ammo, spare tire, blanket, collection of novels, food? No way. The zombies are going to get you.....

No I was just suggesting a way out of that 'out of gas and the car will not fill issue.'

Mike
