Frankly disappointed to see the M5 CS lose against all its rivals including AMG. It's quickest in a straight line but I thought this car was built to excel on a track.

Why?
Its direct rival would have been the E63 AMG

The M5 CS is built on the 540i platform, as would the E63 built on the E350

The AMG GT63S is built upon an actual sports car platform of the AMG GT (Front Mid engine + rear wheel steering)

To be just a second behind it is frankly unbelievable

Just imagine if the M5 CS had either of the above advantages

I think BMW's statement at launch was that this would be the quickest way around the ring with 4 seats, so yes the AMG GT 4 door is a competitor as is the Panamera. Both much heavier cars and with better times.

The rear wheel steering would help of course. But if BMW makes a claim it's fair game to question the results.

I was surprised the C&D drivers got the Porsche Cayenne through the esses at a higher speed than the M5CS, but down 2 seconds over the lap. I'm assuming it's heavier than the M5CS.

I'm not a very aggressive driver on track so I don't think I've spun up the rear tires the way that was shown in the video. Is it possible they had the M5 in two wheel for the lap times? Or was that smokey turn just for a video highlight?

The Bmw's could have done better, had management cared enough to equip them with other than the worn out tires they supplied.

It makes you wonder what they were thinking?

Apparently, BMWs only had one set of tires, and that could make a big difference.

Perhaps all the bmws would've done better had there been extra tires for them to chew through? They do mention it throughout the video where all the other companies had spare tires to run extra laps, all 3 of the BMWs were not provided with the spare rubber.

Indeed - something's often up when a CS is tested - either BMW don't bother with a factory time or the glove compartment door keeps falling off during a test, or no extra tires, etc.

Here's another video with a good comparison. (Russian)

Real world testing with one set of tires, worn out. 5 seconds out of a laptime from the 2018's amazing laptime is awesome. I say take it an run with it. Everybody knows what's up.

The GT63 is based of a modified E63 platform.

It looks like tires reduced the number of runs - this explains the results. Hopefully there's a chance to do a fairer test in the future.

Correct. No question that lack of rear wheel steering is holding back the CS. The 2 fastest 4 doors (AMG and Porsche) both have very effective rear wheel steering and despite weighing 500+ lbs more than the CS, both corner better.

It is a pity that BMW didn't bother with rear wheel steering for the M5.

While making the car faster, RWS is notorious for unreliability issues, because it is not simple in any way.

I agree. RWS would have made the CS feel way nimbler for day to day driving, and faster around a track…..no question.

I hope BMW does an official hot run of the Nurburgring so we can get some bragging rights back.

I found the video - it looks like BMW did a factory run and must have gotten a better result than the record. Looking at the marketing coverage for this car though, it doesn't seem to be a priority for the company to get involved in the ring record tussles between manufacturers. The factory run for M4 GTS was 9 seconds quicker than Sport Auto, so we can just "do the math" for now as Markus puts it!

The read from today says they had one set of MPS4S for the CS!! Plus the hicks didn’t like the multiple setting options. They want no more than three drive options for ease of operation it seems….

If you’re going to spend so much time and energy into a multi-section feature article, for heaven’s sake do some homework and get properly set up cars! Seems like the very basic thing to do. Voids all validity of the exercise.

So I walked away impressed anyway.. especially on the M240I xdrive (I admit I have one on way).. BMW not only should have provided a fresh set of tires, but also the car could have used the 893M bigger and wider wheels with higher performance standard tires and M performance features.. probably shaving several seconds off time..

That tire situation for the BMWs is too convenient to be a coincidence.

Exactly Motor Trend car was sent with PS 4S's Tire Rack shows a Cup 2 available for it and you also have PS 5 about to release. Very obvious this car has a lot more in it on the track.

Are they holding it back to create a buffer for the new M5?
