Frankly disappointed to see the M5 CS lose against all its rivals including AMG. It's quickest in a straight line but I thought this car was built to excel on a track.

Its direct rival would have been the E63 AMG The M5 CS is built on the 540i platform, as would the E63 built on the E350 The AMG GT63S is built upon an actual sports car platform of the AMG GT (Front Mid engine + rear wheel steering) To be just a second behind it is frankly unbelievable Just imagine if the M5 CS had either of the above advantages

I think BMW's statement at launch was that this would be the quickest way around the ring with 4 seats, so yes the AMG GT 4 door is a competitor as is the Panamera. Both much heavier cars and with better times.
The rear wheel steering would help of course. But if BMW makes a claim it's fair game to question the results. |

I was surprised the C&D drivers got the Porsche Cayenne through the esses at a higher speed than the M5CS, but down 2 seconds over the lap. I'm assuming it's heavier than the M5CS.
I'm not a very aggressive driver on track so I don't think I've spun up the rear tires the way that was shown in the video. Is it possible they had the M5 in two wheel for the lap times? Or was that smokey turn just for a video highlight? |

Apparently, BMWs only had one set of tires, and that could make a big difference.

Perhaps all the bmws would've done better had there been extra tires for them to chew through? They do mention it throughout the video where all the other companies had spare tires to run extra laps, all 3 of the BMWs were not provided with the spare rubber.

Real world testing with one set of tires, worn out. 5 seconds out of a laptime from the 2018's amazing laptime is awesome. I say take it an run with it. Everybody knows what's up.

It looks like tires reduced the number of runs - this explains the results. Hopefully there's a chance to do a fairer test in the future.

It is a pity that BMW didn't bother with rear wheel steering for the M5. |

The read from today says they had one set of MPS4S for the CS!! Plus the hicks didn’t like the multiple setting options. They want no more than three drive options for ease of operation it seems….
If you’re going to spend so much time and energy into a multi-section feature article, for heaven’s sake do some homework and get properly set up cars! Seems like the very basic thing to do. Voids all validity of the exercise. |

So I walked away impressed anyway.. especially on the M240I xdrive (I admit I have one on way).. BMW not only should have provided a fresh set of tires, but also the car could have used the 893M bigger and wider wheels with higher performance standard tires and M performance features.. probably shaving several seconds off time..

That tire situation for the BMWs is too convenient to be a coincidence.
