Had two different year F90s. One was a tenth slower than the M3 0-60 and one was a tenth quicker. 2.79 for M5 2.84 for M3. M3 is quicker in the quarter too. I think if I had put downpipes on the m5 it would be as quick or quicker. But there are several M3s in the 9s on stock turbos. Carbon seats and ccbs on the m3 and just ccbs on M5

I just traded in my 2021 M3 G80 base this week for a new F90. Torn meniscus made the manual a chore so was looking for an automatic. The main reason for the upgrade was the V8 and overall handling. I don’t drive like a hooligan in real life, but I’ve done the M Driving Days in Monticello NY twice. On the big track I found that the G80 was faster, but squirrely. The M5 just felt planted and punched the straights amazingly. I also love the V8 power and sound. It was much more of a secure feeling in the M5 vs the M3.
I didn’t love the pictures of the big grill when I first saw the M3, however in person I fell in love with it and think it looks much more aggressive than the stately M5. If it was just based on looks, I would stick with the G80. But that S63 V8 is something special. If the next M5 version is a hybrid i6, I think this thing should retain value. I also like the 50y roundel which seems to be a minority opinion here, but I don’t care. First impressions on ownership are that this thing is a beast that I have yet to unleash. It feels much bigger so parking and pulling into my tight garage requires more attention. Also, the suspension is much more luxurious over the bumpy NJ town roads which I’m happy about. So far happy with the switch. |

When I was at a 1/2 mile event (about 2 weeks ago), I have a good friend with a g80 XDrive, eventuri, exhaust, jb4. My f90 Comp has racechip, charcoal delete, and had 95 octane at the time. Stock other than that. He and I ran together several times, and there was not one point where it was even remotely close, other than maybe the first 60 ft. We both used launch control, went, and shortly after launch I walked put a distance between us, and continued to pull away. I did 160 mph in the 1/2 mile pretty consistently. slowest was 157 if I recall. His best was 143mph, and consistent also. There had to be at least 10-15 car lengths between us at the 1/2 mile end. So 60-130, as well as 1/4mile time I don't see how g80 could be quicker, especially not 1/2 second? 1/2 second when you're talking 10-11 second cars is a lot. Big gap. But he is 13-17 MPH slower trap speed which tells me when I pulled away at the start, I continued to widen the gap until we quit. If he was quicker, but got bad start, or gaining on me, his trap speed would be higher than mine, but it was much lower. There was a g80 there running 165MPH 1/2 mile, however he had much more than a JB4. It was a full tune, on race gas, and other stuff I don't know, but it was a lot more than jb4 I know that. He's done sub 3 second 0-60 pulls using draggy or whatever he has. So he knows how to drive. I just don't see how an g80 M3 with JB4 and bolt ons, could be faster than a f90 with racechip. Assuming JB4 adds similar HP to the m3, as the racechip to m5, the M3 is still down 100-120HP over the M5, and down a lot more torque. The M3 is lighter, but not THAT much lighter, 3-400 LBs? Not enough to make massive difference, when the M5 has a lot more power and torque. Something was wrong with my friends car, or something else isnt lining up here. Check this thread out. I've owned both and it doesn't make logical sense. But I've tested both with my dragy. These cars are making extremely fast times with minimal mods |

I also had an almost 800 HP 2021 RS7 that was slower than both my M5 and M3.

g80 xdrive, jb4, Venturi, exhaust. no downpipes or full tune VS : f90 comp, racechip, 95 octane. Outcome was the f90 completely stomped the g80. not even close. 1/8, 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile, didn't matter, it wasn't even remotely close or a fair race. Maybe there is something wrong with his G80. But it sure looks sick, he did a great job with it, and it's a sweet car. Not trying to bash the g80, but there was no comparison in terms of the races. |

And ya, I hear the power band argument as well, but from 0-140-160 MPH, and a 1/2 mile traveled, both cars were in their power band. We both started at 0, and ended at the same place. I just arrive much sooner, and passing the line at a much higher speed. I don't know how much more track would be needed for the powerband of the M3 to be in place? LOL. Not to mention, the M5 "power band" in my opinion is when the torque comes on, and its so early on the M5, like 2500 RPM I think ? and it stays at peak torque until almost redline (if i'm not mistaken), power band or not, I was faster in every scenario and by a large margin. Being in the power band more, longer, and sooner, to me, basically means the car is faster? Does it not? I would think if he caught his power band, he should have at least had a similar trap speed, even if he was behind me. If his trap was higher, even if behind me that tells me he's catching me, and eventually would catch and pass me, if there was enough track. But I was nearly 20mph faster trap, signifying I was crossing the line sooner, and continuing to widen the gap the entire time. Last edited by jnotrom711; 11-06-2022 at 06:58 PM.. |

And I ageee with a full tune and ethanol the g80 can be a weapon, as can the f90 I was mainly referring to the mods the 2 cars have which is racechip, and he had jb4, not a full tune. Which seemed to be the same or very similar set up to your scenario with mods but you having opposite results than what I had, which is the g80 being quicker than your f90. It’s interesting how different these cars can be from car to car even if it’s the same car. You would think from one g80 to another with similar mods they’d be similar result. Of course when we talk about full tunes the sky is the limit with both cars assuming with other mods are done as well like bigger turbos etc. |

All depends on what you are looking for. Had an F90 and went to the G80, definitely preferred the G80. F90 is a great GT car with ridiculous power and a very high comfort level. Speed is effortless with the TT V8, but is also makes it feel like you can never really use the power. Full throttle 1,2, kill someone speed.
G80 is more fun to drive in the canyons because it feels more connected and is more fun to link corners. You feel the speed more when driving it which made it more fun for me around town. Summary, if you want a car to drive back and forth to work and enjoy merging onto the freeway at 125 mph+ F90. If you like to get out on the backroads and throw your car into corners G80. I had a 2015 M3 (F80) I purchased new in July of 2014 and transitioned out of a 2014 C7 Corvette Z51. I was never a fan of the exhaust sound of the F80 even after I listened to countless aftermarket exhaust systems. I almost installed an AWE exhaust but I missed the sound of my V8 in my previous Corvettes (8 total since 1992). I originally was looking at a 2018 Porsche 911 S in the beginning of 2018. I then test drove my 2018 M5 and the rest was history. I chose the M5 over the 911 but I still feel the need to own a 911 and it may happen sooner than later. I am interested in the new 911 T or 911 GTS. My wife of 36 years missed the M3 (F80) and I was going to buy her a new M3 (G80) when it was released to the public and keep the M5. Then the current M3 was released and we both agree that we do not like the looks of the front grill and that by itself was the main reason we passed on the current M3. So yes, looks play a big part in car ownership and trumps total performance all day long. One can only drive so fast on the public roadways and while performance figures are neat but not the end all be all for street driving. The upscale feeling and look of the M5 is much nicer to me and the wife. I enjoy the sound quality of the Bowers and Wilkens stereo in the M5. In the F80 (HK sound system) I did not want to install a new stereo system (amps, speakers, sound processor) and instead elected to install the BAVSOUND speakers and that helped the sound of the stereo in the F80 for the better. The sound of the V8 is music to our ears compared to the M3 exhaust note.

I own pre LCI m5. Never really liked M3/M4 except for E46/E90. Newer ones did not sound well and F30 looked great but had terrible interior in my opinion, and the newest one i genuinely hate it’s looks. I refuse to pay anywhere close to six figures for the car that I don’t love the looks of. Looks are Subjective and that’s how I feel about it. When it’s time to replace my E63 wagon it will probably be a 911. Making purchase decision between M3/M5 based on performance alone is not the right approach to purchase either one.
