I wonder how effective this will be. The person applied the tape to the tank as well as under the heat shield between the tank and engine or down pipes.

There are 2 heat shields, one immediately over the turbos and cats and a second one above that. I would not bother putting adhesive heat tape on the first one since I think the adhesive would not stay.

The ultimate heat management would be DEI or similar GT22 turbo blankets, wrapped or coated catless downpipes, heat reflective tape under the upper heat shield, and heat reflective tape on the underside of the tank.

holy crap. they replaced all the charge air coolers as well as new kind of coolant?

not sure what you meant but are you saying the coolant itself is corroding the tanks and causing leaks?

According to the bulletin:

"CAUSE
Aluminum corrosion in the charge air intercoolers, or in the radiator for the low temperature cooling is causing an unfavorable chemical reaction to the coolant."

Why wouldn't this be a type of recall?

Did you notice the color of the coolant before they changed it? I checked my coolant about a week ago since several postings have indicated coolant can sometimes be low. I noticed it to be low. I only have just under 4,000 miles on the 2021 car. I decided to call my preferred BMW dealership to see if they had coolant for purchase. The person on the phone asked about the year of the car and indicated there are two different coolants. He indicated newer cars now use a newer green coolant. The preferred dealership is further away than another dealership so I said what the heck I will go to the dealership closer my house. When I get there the parts person is like it does not matter which coolant you buy. He indicated you can even mix the blue and green. He was a very nonchalant type. Based on his extensive experience working behind the parts counter he was confident there is no difference between the green and blue. I tell him I want the green since that is what is in the car. He goes returns with a gallon and tells me it is the green. When I get home and open the jug it is the blue. I call back the next day and tell the idiot gave me the wrong coolant and they made it seem like it was a big deal to get the green coolant for the year and model car I have. The green seems to be a new coolant versus the blue.

G12 is the new coolant. It is green. Backwards compatible but supposedly you should not put the older blue in a car for which green is specified.

ambletx did you have the blue coolant prior to the repair? Surely they changed something to prevent this from happening again. In your case the cause does not appear to have been caused by the coolant tank. It does not look like the tank or cap were replaced.

Even the blue coolant is pretty good. I’d be curious whether some previous owner or shop changed coolant with a non-BMW coolant.

That really sucks. I hope this isn’t an issue with my car as well. But this is one of the reasons I do an engine coolant flush on all my cars every two years despite mileage. Over time, through heat cycles, coolant will corrode internals.

Was told the "old" coolant was reacting with the metal of the tank and radiators, causing the leak and making a very bad odor in the process.

I can confirm my '19 base used blue, and my '22 comp uses green. Always dealer serviced at the same dealer, by the same technician.

Did you have a coolant related failure in either car?

My 2020 M550 has green coolant, its been in twice now for Low Coolant and Coolant smell. Each time the Stealership says its "Normal" for M5's and M550 engines to lose coolant. I've never heard something so stupid.
My car has just over 13k miles. One injector and Coil pack has already been replaced due to the leak. This is ridiculous. Should be a TSB or recall.

BMW going to the bean counters and down the drain with them.

At least the Electric BMW's won't have this issue.

Pre-LCI needed coolant every couple of thousand miles from something like 16K onward, but no cooling system failure was diagnosed unlike a lot of others on this thread (and the forum generally). I was just repeatedly told it burned coolant when driven hard. My SA was kind enough to give me all the unlimited free (blue) coolant I needed, sending me home every time I was at the dealer with a few large bottles to keep at home, and a few of the smaller (1 quart?) size to keep in the car at all times.

After PDI on my LCI (at a different dealership because it was purchased out of state), I asked the coolant level to be checked and topped off in my presence. They obliged (with green coolant), which I verified was in the tank to begin with. When break in service was done (with my above SA at my home dealer), it was topped off with green coolant.

Same experience I had. I'm always told it's "normal" and they make me sound like a (car) hypochondriac. I'm not — it's a lease. But I'd like to avoid problems while the car's in my possession, if for no reason other than I'd like to not have to be inconvenienced when a problem arises. Agree that it's ridiculous, but I've been lucky in that it hasn't caused a problem so far, and my service department and SA assuage with me with a life time (well, lease time) supply of free coolant to attempt to make up for it.
