Exhaust bangs and pops on Base M5 disappear after a few revs?
So I noticed that if I rev my '19 M5 Base in Sport Plus maybe 4 to 5 times in a row, the bangs and pops just disappear completely. They then return after 45 seconds or so. Did anyone else notice this?

If they car is driven flat out, there are non of the exhaust extras, just regular noise. At 75% you will hear it a lot. I believe this is some sort of built in protection.

This happens when I'm standing still. Pops and bangs don't disappear when I'm driving. Disappear when I'm in park and just revving consistently. I don't do this always and only noticed when I was testing something out.

When the car is warmed up to normal operating temps it will "pop and bang" in park while revving the engine, or at least mine does.

Ive mentioned this on occasion, but nobody took me up on it. When stationary revving, it does seem to stop the pops and bangs after a few revs. I put it down to software, protecting the engine ?. |

To get the pops and bangs, the car effectively misfires, either igniting late in the cycle when the exhaust valve is already open (the more common method), or actually not firing at allow, allowing fuel to be sent into the exhaust system which then ignites with the temperature of the exhaust.
This combustion later in the cycle, or in the exhaust causes extra heat to make it's way to the catalytic converters which in turn could damage them. Therefore, it's consecutive use is limited to protect the catalytic converters. You will also hear lots of people with the particulate filters complaining about reduced noise. Effectively the particulate filter acts like an extra muffler muting the noise and the later combustion from the pops and bangs could damage them too, so they're mapped out on PPF cars.

Mine does the same. I can usually only rev with pops for about 3x in a row before having to switch the modes or drive it. I've perfected the driving and pops in 1, 2 and 3 gear tho. Love it. |

I wonder if the same is experienced with an aftermarket exhaust system, because that would be unfortunate. |

That sounds really good for M5 Base, and exactly how mine used to sound. I then got a complete M5 Competition exhaust system installed on my M5 Base (due to lease), but it still sounds the same (to me)...

Yes, for sure....definitely have learned how to drive this car to get the most "bang" for the buck (no pun intended). Love hearing the noise.

Thanks guys! You'd be amazed at how many random kids/teens ask me to rev it when I'm driving around the city. I much prefer that over someone asking for a burnout. 😅

I have the M sport exhaust and 95% of the time neutral revving in S+ will give plenty of pops, but there's the rare occurrence where the car gets stage fright and won't pop even on the first rev. This occurs randomly in my experience.

I've learned to go to comfort and back to sport plus mode. Then it works for another series or so. 😅
