Yeah, don't disturb the home peace. Lol. You're an awesome Dad nevertheless... Just for even considering getting him a BMW anything. 😅👌✅

PS: keep us posted! I want a fun daily driver to park my M5. So I'm curious what y'all ultimately decide to get.

We've already planned to get him a car, but is it crazy to sync the purchase with the time he gets his permit so he learns on his actual car and not our $100k cars?

Sorry to those that posted in the other copy of this post, idk how it ended up in the tuning section. Just wanted to hit a wider audience here in the general forum.
That is exactly what we did for our 2 teenage boys. Wife drives a Yukon XL Denali and I have the M5 Comp. We got them a car about 6 months before they turned 16...they learned to drive on that. Once they turned 16 we got a second car so they each had one.

While I've let them drive my M5 (with me in the car) on a few rare occasions, I would never let them "learn" to drive on my car. And making them learn on a big SUV is a bit cruel in my opinion (plus when first learning they just aren't capable drivers to handle that large of a car, IMO). So we got them a smaller car to learn on.

Now in full disclosure, I learned to drive on a 1973 Jeep Wrangler with a V-8 and 3 speed manual transmission. No power steering or power brakes. My dad told me if I could drive that car, I could drive any car. Man how times have changed.

Its not crazy to buy the car before the license test, as long as its not a brand new pristine car, just in case they damage it since they are inexperienced. For my youngest, I found a rare 1-owner 2000 323i 5MT in perfect condition (albeit high mileage), and made him learn manual and use it on the driver's test. The instructor said it had been over one year since he had seen someone take their test with a manual!

Also other great things about manuals and teens, it helps them stay focused as well as keep their phones away, and it means that other kids can't drive their car since most kids don't know how to drive stick.

I recommend you look at used Mazda 3/6's (both can be had with stick or auto), fantastic cars, great quality and reliable, with not too much power but still a lot of fun to drive. My oldest and his wife both have had Mazdas for years and love them, zero issues.

I rocked an E-150 conversion van in high school and then ... downgraded to a FWD Monte Carlo through college and grad school. Ladies couldn't resist.

You guys have me completely convinced a stick shift is the best bet for him to learn on! In fact I think we're going to shoot for a Subaru Impreza hatchback 5MT AWD. Something like this:

That looks like a great choice, I would have loved to get that car at 15.

On a side note, will your kids be insured to drive the M5's and if so, what percentage will the insurance increase on average?

I have 3 kiddos that are about to be of driving age in 3-4 years.

OP’s post read to me like his cars (at $100k each) are worth more to him than his kid.

I’d let the kid learn on your cars. They’re just cars and presumably insured. In ten years the cars will probably have been replaced but the kid’s memory will be intact - and down the road he’ll reflect on what it means to have been allowed to learn on those expensive vehicles.

Alternatively, if you really can’t let him drive your cars, then you probably should be thinking of trading down to something he can drive and you’re less wrapped up in (financially or emotionally).

Sorry that’s harsh; but it is how I feel. My kids learned on the cars we had and that includes a 2002tii that was pretty special to me - but not as special as the kids. Clutches and transmissions are wear items anyway.

Whelp this isn't going to well...

Often the sign of a strong person isn't necessarily how they react to their feelings or what they think they're entitled to share because any child can do that but in their ability to reach deep inside to understand that not everyone comes from the same place and doesn't see things equally; and attempt to provide constructive input not from their ivory tower but from a genuine desire to help.

If you had taken the time to give a shit you would've seen that my primary concern comes from either car being too powerful or too big (F=MA... always), which would likely lead to accident risking my sons life or yes damage to our property and would be highly irresponsible on my part; but clearly you live life fast and loose and don't give a shit if your kid ran into a pole in a car that's faster then a 2002 McLaren F1, so forgive me if your 2002 experience doesn't equate.

You're right I do not have the financial means to total either car, walk out the next day and buy another but because I'm "poor" to you that equates to me not loving my son? The notion that your connotation of my statements allows/entitles/enables you to judge me on 1-2 paragraphs worth of initial input on the love for my son is beyond reprehensible. I'm proud that I'm humble enough to ask folks for input on this topic and I'm proud that your able to write your stupid ass comments in this great nation, but you sir have clearly lost sight of helping your fellow man and need to step off your high horse.

Sorry that's harsh; but its real.

My apologies for misunderstanding your intent. I know a lot of people who won’t let their kids ride in their cars and wouldn’t even consider letting them drive them. Those people do value their cars (and other things) more than their kids, and I went there, inappropriately, with you.

Man it is refreshing for you to say that!! I appreciate you writing that and completely accept your apology, especially since I could have been more refrained in my retort. I live my life for my 4 kids so it most definitely invoked an emotional response from me, the M5 is like the tip of the stem on the cherry.

Hey Jimmy, I asked my insurance (Geico) that exact question, because we're likely going to buy an Impreza on Monday. I cant give you any info now because apparently while the boy only has a learners he doesn't effect our premium at all, maybe someone else on this post could help us both out with what to expect once they're licensed.

Had a neighbor get his daughter a Porsche Macan as her college gift. Must be nice.

This has become very common where I live. My son went to public school, and even there the cars that parents were buying their children were new and expensive. One of his teachers always joked about the student's parking lot having nicer cars than the teacher's lot. My son was also friends with some kids from private school and their parents bought their kids C63's, M3's (new and old), new Lexuses, Macans and Cayenne's etc. I can't imagine how expensive the insurance of a teen boy having a C63 or M3 would be

This is what we have been doing in my family for years.
All my kinds, nieces, nephews etc follow the same kind of blueprint:

- We buy them a $10k to $15k used car when they turn 15. Something safe with under 50k miles they can literally beat up for the next 3 years. They learn to drive with it and drive my cars or my brothers cars etc as well to get to know how different cars drive.

- about 3 months before high school graduation they have to sell their own cars to private party. I think it's important for them to see the value of the cars they just drove for 3 years:

- they then get a new car at graduation. The value of the new car depends on how they did in school, any scholarships like academic or athletic, if they are moving away for school or staying home etc. It teaches them that they have to work for a nice car and won't just be given to them.
At the end of the day some will get something pretty nice for an 18 year old if they do well in school and save us money on tuition and housing.

I would suggest a new or used VW GTI with a 6-speed manual. If they learn how to drive on a manual, they'll become a better driver and they'll never forget.

There's also this little thought-of benefit: none of their friends will know how to drive a manual so they can't "loan" it to anyone else to potentially do something stupid in it.

Also, in this age of cellphone-crazy distracted driving, it is much harder to pick up and watch your cellphone while driving if you need your right hand to shift.

Plus, I think the GTI is cool as a useful/fun first car.

Just some food for thought.

My son is on his 2nd Manual GTI and they have both been exceptional a ton of fun to drive.
