M Sport Vs. M Performance Exhaust /F90

So when I built my F90 at the dealership I told my highly experienced SA after I got the car I was going to put the Akrapovic exhaust on it. He told me not to worry about it because we could put the M performance exhaust in the build, and it was just as good and would not affect warranty. I said great. Looking into it more after the car was ordered, and the allocation was filled I noticed in the competition package, of which I am getting, on the build sheet it included the M sport exhaust. I really didn’t think much of it until just last night and then I realized the wording was different. Now I asked the SA about this very thing a couple months ago, and he said the M performance exhaust was coming. So I let it go. It doesn’t look like that’s what’s coming. It looks like the M sport. Now gentlemen, I know they are different and one is titanium because I’ve done lots of research last night, but is there a major difference between the two when it comes to sound and should I upgrade today to the M performance titanium exhaust? This is my first M5 and I really don’t know much about the best type of sound you can get from it and what the best options are. I do know I don’t want it to be hella obnoxious AFTER the cold start. I don’t mind a somewhat loud cold start. What advice do you guys with experience got for me? Thanks.

I have never owned the M Peformance Exhaust, so I will only speak to the points that I am qualified to answer based on that.

Based on everything you’ve said, you are certainly getting the M Sport Exhaust which is the “standard” exhaust for Competition package equipped cars. You should still have the ability to have the MPE added as a port installed option. Other owners have reported port installed options adding 7 to 10 days to the lead time. There are plenty of owners here who will tell you there is a minimal difference from the actual standard exhaust equipped on cars that do not have the Competition package, with the difference between the base model and the Sport merely being a deleted resonator.

As for titanium, many owners have stated that on the MPE, the titanium portion is just from the axel back, and the portion from the cat back is still stainless steel. There are some weight savings to be realized, but it seems that the entire exhaust being made of titanium is a common misconception.

Again, I haven’t owned the MPE, but I am quite familiar with it. There is a significant difference in sound, both at cold start, and at idle as compared to the M Sport Exhaust. One thing to keep in mind in that unlike the M Sport Exhaust, the MPE does not have valves, so you have less control of that sound. I have seen some third party manufacturers sell aftermarket valves for the MPE, but I can’t speak to those at all.

There are plenty of owners on here who have the MPE, and quite a few who have had both. Hopefully they’ll chime in here to fill in the gaps.

None of the port-installed options show up on my configuration on the web. Not a single one. Even after having been installed. Maybe that will change after they print the sticker?

Mine only shows Sports Exhaust, as well, but MPE has been installed. Picking up next week.

That’s interesting because the pictures I see of the MPE they have valves. So it sounds like the MPE is loud all the time. In other words you have no choice? No options? I have read some threads on the MPE and everyone seems to love it, with the exception of the cold start having a couple complaints from guys that live in very tight neighborhoods

I know you said that your read some of the threads on this topic, so my apologies if you have already seen this one, but I think it has a lot of useful info for you.

https://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1818301

In terms of all the time, it’s certainly louder all the time than the sport exhaust. I don’t think that necessarily means it’s defeaning. Losing valve control doesn’t help that obviously. But I have yet to see a forum member complain after getting the MPE, nor having a desire to revert to the Sport exhaust. I find the sport exhaust as delivered from the factory leaves some more sound to be desired for me personally, and I don’t even necessarily particularly like “loud” exhausts. I have other cars with their marque’s version of more performance oriented exhausts, and I am really happy with them. My M5 is my DD and my mobile office. It does see duty shuttling clients around at times, so I like to keep this car a little more low key. If that wasn’t the case, I would have pulled the trigger on the MPE ten times by now. As you said, everyone seems to love it. I did a healthy amount of in depth research multiple times on the MPE, and came away with the same conclusion each time — that it’s freakin’ awesome.

Tonight, once I find it again, I’ll post a link of a really good video comparing two cars, one equipped with MPE and one equipped with the Sport exhaust compared to one another in all three modes.

The Port-Installed options will be reflected in the window sticker. If I recall correctly, they never appear on My BMW.

OP, MPE all day versus M-Sport .. not even close .. I’ve had both.

IMO, MPE adds much needed character to the exhaust note.

Jose, you were exactly who I was thinking of when I said there were a few owners who’ve had both. In all your posts, I’ve never seen you say one bad thing about MPE.

Tbh the valves are not a big deal. I put the Fi exhaust on mine but in comfort it’s so quiet with the valves open. The Fi exhaust has working valves but there’s no need for them really if you’re in comfort trying to keep it quiet in the neighborhood or cruising by a cop.

All the full cat back exhausts main party trick is they delete the resonator. You’ll get slightly different pipes and maybe a bit different mufflers but that’s the main thing. A mid-pipe or resonator delete with custom welded pipes will do most of the same work.

You’ll get slightly different notes and aesthetics between brands but probably can’t go wrong with whatever you choose. If you’re debating M Sport exhaust vs MPE. There’s no debate. MPE.

So I have a ‘23 F90 that I had the MPE installed at the port. As such, I have no experience firsthand with the MSport exhaust. What I can say though is that I love the MPE and have zero regrets getting it. Is it a bit loud? Yes. Does it make my wife cringe when I start it up? Yes. Doubly so when we are in a parking garage. Does it put a smile on my face every time I start it up. Absolutely.

Just do it. You won’t be disappointed.

I live in an apartment complex with a parking garage, so I'm looking forward to this. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to be purposely making it loud, and it will be a light touch pulling in and out until I'm a good distance out on the main roads. But there will definitely be that throaty echo of underlying power. My spots are right by the EV section, too, and I really can't deny feeling a bit of troll'y goodness over that.

For cold starts, I think I'm relatively well-insulated. I park on the lower level, which is actually below ground. There is a unit diagonally up through a thick concrete wall and dirt, and I don't think even they will hear it.

Starting up a cold M5 with MPE in an enclosed space brings about two things... For one the sound is glorious. It is louder than most exotics I've heard start. Two, because it's so loud, everyone will hear it. Through some concrete or not, they will hear some of it.

I go to every NHL game in Vegas, and I park in a parking garage surrounded by other people going to the game. When we leave and I start my car - I can hear it throughout the entire parking garage when I use remote start and I don't hear any other cars. It is that loud. If I'm talking to someone and I start it within 20-30 feet away, we have to pause the conversation until it gets quiet.

In short, it sounds amazing, is loud, and will definitely piss off your neighbors and other people in the garage.

Lmao. I might have gotten more than I bargained, then. I'm a pretty reserved person and like to stick to the background. Guess this will elicit some attention regardless. I'm picking it up tomorrow and will be staying an extra night and heading back on Thursday. Been a long time planning.

Here's some videos I made. If starting it in an closed space, just understand the sound echoing and reverberating will make it seem much louder (even though its still very loud in open spaces).

If I do catless downpipes
Would there be a difference in the mpe exhaust if I only have the m sport exhaust?

Picked up mine today. Absolutely love MPE. Great balance of exhaust notes. Love the easy blurbles, but not so easy they get annoying.
