Driving hard on a patched tire?
How do you guys feel about driving hard (wheels squeeling hard) on a patched tire?
Michelin states they can be patched safely up to 3x, which I personally would never patch it more than twice. Would you drive 150+ MPH on a patched tire? I always opt for an interior patch vs. plug which are only designed for temporary use, whereas a patch is a more lasting solution. On a similar topic, would you track a car with a wheel that had a bend repaired by a quality shop? In theory the bend + the heat and other methods used to repair it leaves you with a compromised wheel. How compromised, I have no clue. I’m curious everyone’s responses here as in the past I’ve always erred on the side of caution and replaced the tire if I had any doubts, often replacing both depending on tread depth. |

I have plugged many tires on RS6, M2, M5, Boxster, Sienna, and have never changed my driving mode. Worst case scenario you get a flat. The tire is NOT going to blow up because of a plug. If that were the case, it would blow up when you got a nail in the tire. As long as the sidewall is not damaged and the hole is not too big it is fine. Otherwise the plugs and patches would not be legal world wide.

I usually do the cheap "temporary" plug and drive the way I always do. I wouldn't track it with one of those. Even with a real patch I probably wouldn't track it. Somewhere I read a patch is supposed to drop the tire speed rating by 1. If that's the case and you don't have the m driver's package you in theory would be ok with a w rating after a patch.

I do an inside patch and don’t worry about it afterwards. I don’t track my car but occasionally see high speeds and sometimes leave a little rubber.

I too also in the back of my mind hate it when an expensive tire is patched.
Having said that I did not not change my style of driving over the 3 years I had a patch on my previous car. As for rim and tracking, there are just too many variables, I do not think I would be comfortable personally. |

First: where are you driving 150+ mph in an F90?
Second: cost of replacing a tire is peanuts for the security of a structurally sound tire at those speeds. Third: if the wheel was fixed appropriately, sure. But the cost of a wheel is also peanuts compared with the cost of tracking a car in general. |

What is wrong with going 150+ mph in a car factory limited at the low end to 164? Why isn’t a properly patched tire structurally sound? What is wrong with a properly repaired wheel?

Currently have a plug in one rear tire and a patch on the other.
No issues. Same driving style. Been this way for about 3k miles so far

A simple small nail or screw puncture that doesn't SHRED the local area isn't the same as a pair of lockjaw pliers from a construction site going through the tread. The patch for acceptable tracking is not a temporary. Must be a permanent from the inside patch. The bad results are not going to be the tire exploding, but flats on track are way uncool. Without TPMS, occasionally fatal (not kidding, very very rare - wreck from flat tire, happens). and the last is the tire. >5 years old? Worn? Marginal brand, or top tier? These are the things to consider. I WILL track on a properly patched Michelin, or Toyo, or Hoosier <5 years old, not to the wear bars, in good condition. And I do 160+ on track, in a safe environment, with flaggers (for dude above who asked who goes 150 in an F90). Shawn |
