I'm so confused right now. Some people and my service advisor say it mutes out the exhaust and the pops/bangs and some say it doesn't. Some even say it's even more aggressive after the update.
It's a zero sum decision to have it done because there's no going back if it has a negative effect. We need 2 owners. One with the update and one without to make a comparative video. I have a 21 LCI without the update and I took delivery before the update. My brother has a 20 with no update. We need to find someone who has a car after the update. |

So..... 2019 M5 Comp (Pre LCI)-- Serviced in VA, but registered in MI so exempt from inspections or emission testing.
I had this service done a little over a week ago. I can report no noticeable change in the exhaust. No real pops and bangs in Eff/Sport like normal.. it does make some muted noises, but sport+ is still sport plus. Also, parked in sport+ or any mode, you can rev the shit out to redline like before, and the noise profile is the same- once the car is up to temp. I will say right after service, I had the feeling it was more muted, but after a week of driving, it's like normal-- The speed-sensitive volume gets set to default, so I wonder if to a degree if the fake noise is also modified based upon this setting. The system might have to do a bit of relearning as like everyone else states, you lose all your settings. So, it might reset the learning. I will also note they did a general update to the idrive, but no new features here. Fantastic 5 mjr24 Last edited by DocWeatherington; 03-26-2021 at 09:17 AM.. |

I've got a 2018 non-comp and haven't had the recall done yet. I'm in San Diego area and happy to offer up mine for a local comparison of sound.

Yours as of now would have the full sound experience-full original burble tune and no filters. If you ever plan on getting the recall done, just see if any of the super loud pops (ie during high rpm downshifts or letting off at 4-5K rpm) disappear.

Honestly, after driving it for a few days....it's definitely gotten louder. I really think while it's relearning that it's not going to pop as much.
Obviously some of us probably don't rev it much. I almost wonder if those having this issue bought a pre owned one where the owner revved it for awhile so the computer learned that....and now it's not popping after the update because the new owner just doesn't drive the car that way to open that up while the computer is relearning.

I normally put it in S3 mode and rev it higher in second and third.....probably many times for the first week or two.

Will do. To be honest, I've never really noticed or gone out of my way to notice the pops and burbles so I might not be the best independent judge of this. But happy to put mine up against another local M5 who has had the service done for comparison purposes.

Car is in for recall and some warranty work on some interior pieces but had to run in this afternoon to "replicate" a squeak complaint I had and can confirm the software update didn't change the exhaust. Still sounded the same if not better than before. Still has the pops as much as I don't think they belong on a BMW V8.

I still can't tell after a few weeks of driving. It's definitely louder than when I first got it back.....but I feel it's missing some of what it was.
Again, software updates per se have nothing to do with this. I had my car in several times since this thread was started and they never did anything related to that. I do believe the fuel tank vent "recall" is what changes things. When or why they suddenly do that update (or why they don't do it right away) is the question. This fuel recall has been around for like, what, a year? So why did I not get it until the 8th time at the dealer with this car in that year?

God I hope I don't loose the sounds, my values are open 90% of the time. 2020 here and next service in about 3k miles. I would have to go full tune otherwise.
