Hi there,,, I am trading my F82 for a new car and I am between F90 comp and the new G80 comp,, I do track my car 8/10 times a year and the initial G80 reviews seems that its an excellent track machine,, F90 although has super reviews in the straight lines its a heavy car,, the G80 interior now is way better than F82 and feels same quality as the F90,, final point, the F90 will change shape in 2/3 years and G80 still has 6 years at least.

on other hand, F90 is much elegant and looks better in every way and angle, the LCI is really nice too.

I am waiting till summer to see the MxDrive on the G80.

anyone else has the same decision problem

TIA

If it helps, the F90 has another 4 years to run in present guise. First year was 2018, and its usually a 7 year run, before replacing models.

Seems like overall opinion the new M3 is a mini M5

So you can't go wrong with either one, go test drive them both and choose the one you like more

Some say the G80 is more comparable to the M5 of days old as the length is the size of previous generations (e39) and the F90 is the M7 that never was. The G80 is about the same size as a e39 and F90 is about the size of a short wheel base e38 7 series.

If you can deal with fugly looks the M3 is probably the better choice considering you'll be tracking, and is more compact/lighter in weight than the F90. I would take a good test drive in one though as it has lost some of the raw-ness of the F8X, especially the transmission (if opting for auto).

The M3 doesn't look nice on photos, its kind of acceptable with dark colors. AFAIK this is the last M5 with v8, next one will be either hybrid or fully electrical, either way the next M5 will adopt the same new BMW design language outside and inside, i.e. big grills, new dash style etc.

A third option for suggestion, how about a 2021 C63? A nice bridge between the G80 and F90 as its still compact like the G80, but gets a V8 like the F90, and is between the two in weight. This is the last model year to get a C63 with a V8.

I think I will transfer out of my M5C around a year in and order a G8x awd when the discounts start. The M5 is faster with a few more bells and whistles. Right now, my lease is not far off, or maybe less in some cases, than the G8xs are paying. For the same or a little bit more $, I am picking the M5.

I think the xDrive G80 M3 will feel like a lighter F90 M5 and probably not be hugely slower, at least up to normal speeds... say 100-110mph.

I’m waiting until they introduce the Touring version as I reckon here in Europe it will be the one to hold its value best.

I was thinking the same exactly, the AWD G80 would weigh almost like the F90 with shorter wheel base, in that case F90 is better, the last V8 engine, I was reading the next M5 will be fully electric or at least hybrid, July is not far away and BMW will introduce it by may or June I guess.

I think if Hybrids are still allowed at the point the next M5 is released I’d expect that simply as a last celebration to the combustion engine.

Actually looking forward to see just how good the new C63 will be as a proper performance hybrid.

I just had a go with an F90 Comp in my G82 6MT ... in a straight line, no contest. M5C is a beast. AWD G80 Comp should come closer, but the delta is pretty meaningful in a drag race.

I went with the 21 M5 comp and I'm seriously in love. It's a breathtakingly great car.

I took my 2020 M5C to VIR a few weeks ago and was exactly as expected. Fast as hell on the straights but really had to slow down on the turns in order to rotate the car. The track really makes you appreciate how heavy the car is. In addition to the power on the straights, the thing that impressed me was how well the brakes worked to slow the car down at the end of straights where I was hitting over 160 MPH. So the M5 is competent on the track, but much more of a street car than my 2005 M3 and 2015 M4. I expect the baby M3 (G80) will, like it's big brother, lean more to a street car than a track car. And there is nothing wrong with that. I love my M5!!

Did you disengage the AWD setup and put it into RWD mode. If not then it’s generally a failing of almost all front engined AWD cars that they will push the nose unless you let them settle into the corner before giving the beans, slow in fast out method.

Not sure the new AWD M3/4 will be that much better so if track events are important to you maybe the cheaper RWD and probably slower on the road version is the best option.

This is a good point. My first time on the track with the new car, turned off all the nannies, put everything track settings (sport plus etc) but did keep in AWD. I'll try only rear next time and report.

Well build up the speed rather than going at it full throttle because this thing has a lot more power and especially torque than most things and lighting up the rears is little more than breathing on the throttle.

When in AWD Sport mode I find you need to drive it like most other AWDs, slow in to make sure the nose is hooked up and then you can smash the throttle and control the drift if and when it happens, the regular AWD mode is useless for having any fun.

I'm torn between f90 m5 comp and g80 awd m3 comp. Love the m5, and recognizing how big it is, I still wish it handled a little stiffer.

I haven't driven the m3 comp (either the rwd or awd).

I have been in an m340. While the fit and finish is far from the m5, the drivability and fun was impressive.
