Tire insurance from dealer?
My dealer is offering tire and wheel protection for $1149 for 5 years. I'm thinking it's only gonna be any use when I'm running stock wheels and tires. i.e. not the wintertime, when I have wheels and tires from tirerack. A couple blown tires will pay for the policy, yeah, but it's expensive.
Anyone else in MA buying this? Or, are there other 3rd-party companies selling tire insurance for cheaper? Sorry if this thread is too similar to that other one, but it's kind of a separate topic. |

According to this thread: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=561685, that looks like a decent price.
If you are planning on keeping the stock wheels/tires, the roads in MA are pretty crappy this year from the bad winter and heavy snowfall. Whether it pays for itself is a gamble, like all insurance. I continue to hit the occasional nasty pothole that I swear is going to bend my wheel or deflate my tire. (I try to miss them, but sometimes the sun/shade can hide them). |

Two years ago I paid a little over $500 for five years through the dealer.

It certainly is a gamble. Usually I feel automatically biased against anything that anyone tries to sell me, especially dealers, and I definitely feel that way about this too. Hrmm... |

You should check with your particular dealer (or if you've bought the warranty, check the fine print), but I was told that it would be valid on any "BMW Approved" wheel and tire combo, whether or not it was original and whether or not it was purchased at the the dealer. Your offer might be different though.

Tire Warranty
I read on one of the forums that if you have Goodyear run flats there is a road hazard warranty that comes on the tire, and they will replace it. I picked up a new 128 coupe yesterday, and quite predictably the F&I guy tried to sell me the tire and wheel protection, and was annoyed when I pointed out the Goodyear policy.

I just paid $900 for 3 years of insurance. The finance guy told me that if I changed tires that it would void the CPO warranty on my car. I don't have any plans to change the tires for at least a year, but didn't want to risk paying $400 for a new tire versus $15 a month for insurance.
Did I get a good deal or should I have asked for a kiss on the neck first? |
